What banks in SoCal offer free checking?

I was warned ahead of time that Chase will no longer have free checking. I opened an account when they bought WaMu and had free checking. The account was strictly for "petty" spending and for Ebay and other online shopping. The balance I had was usually small, maybe up to $200 so that if the account got compromised I didn't have to worry much since it's not tied to any other checking/savings account. Grrrr, now Chase will charge a $10 monthly fee for accounts under $1500. Ten bucks is actually a lot!

Anyone recommend any banks that still offers free checking with no minimum or maybe at least $500 minimum?

Wells Fargo has no minimums....$100 overnight to fund account (which you can withdraw the next day), then a recurring transfer from checking -> savings once a month of $25. Just make another transfer the next day $25 savings -> checking. So basically keep $25 in the account and no charges. $10 for opening an account, then $25 if you have direct deposit hit also right now.

100% free.

US Bank in AZ does, I am sure they will in CA as well, sometimes they require direct deposit though. Credit unions are usually pretty good about it as well.
