Wireless USB in Canada (How do I avoid roaming charges)

Ok guys I have a quick question that I need to get figured out.

1. Boss has a Sprint USB wireless adapter for his laptop.
2. He's going on a trip to Toronto, Canada for a couple of days next week.
3. I called Sprint and was told that using the USB would incur roaming charges of (OUCH) $2 per megabyte because they have no network in Canada.

Is there anything that I do to ensure that he has internet connectivity while on this trip for a reasonable cost?(Or any other future international trips for that matter)

Genertic Wireless Modem

Get a generic wireless modem and surf for free WiFi signals. Try Libraries and Hotel Lobbies.

Yes i'm trying to steer him down the WiFi route as well but now he's talking about tethering the laptop to his phone. Even getting his phone setup correctly for this trip in order to avoid roaming charges was tricky. With that plan (Which will be temporary) There is a still a data charge of $2.00 per megabyte. As such i'm HIGHLY advising against tethering.

I'm also searching for a long term solution as I doubt this will be the last time a trip like this happens.

New network with international data package?

Not a cheap venture, but if it's needed...

For the phone we are switching the plan for about a week and it will automatically switch back after the trip is completed.

For the long term you're right, we'll need to figure out a better package. (Most international data packages I saw were very expensive)

I have usb hook up to Blackberry

My firm has my netbook hooked to my Blackberry via usb and coverage is within the basic monthly plan. I don;t really have any issues except in a hign traffic area it slows down a tad.

What is available carrier in Canadia?

I remember when I covered the G7 Summit in Halifax we just bought local phones for te 2 week stint, with a basic month's worth of time and gave them away when we left.

How often is he going to be in Canada? You may look into a Virgin Mobile Canada account. It's fairly reasonable and there's no charge for the equipment up front. It's pretty much a pay as you go plan. He can pick one up while in Canada.

Or he can pick up a prepaid USB stick also with a pay as you go plan.

If his time is worth anything, pay the roaming charges and stop worrying about it.

True but why waste money when you don't have to.

I ended up finding this

If I'm busy, I'm not interested in screwing around with my data connection; I just want it to work the same way that it works at home. If it cost a few $100 extra, it's probably a very small part of the expense of the trip.

We'll get there soon enough.

Good point. Just do him a favor and make it transparent, even if it costs a little more.
