US Population Shifts South and West

Over the past decade, the country's population bent further West and became more Hispanic, multi-racial and mobile, with people moving toward the Sun Belt and away from cities to suburbs.

The final count: 196.8 million whites, 37.7 million blacks, 50.5 million Hispanics and 14.5 million Asians.

Let the redistricting begin!

This is one huge reason Berkshire-Hathaway, Inc. bought Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, versus another. BNSF is a major U.S. player, and, it pretty much rules the West in railways for the mostpart, serving it's growing population.

To take nothing away from the lifestyle, or opportunities in the southeastern United States.....

besides climate, I think the excursion away from the NE is due in great part to excessive taxation and grossly inflated property values.

I agree that is an issue.

Pennsylvania is outrageously expensive for people to live in, even if they just buy the necessities. I luive in Michigan and I know people who migrated to PA in hopes of a job, then were stranded. Not enough even for the basics. Plus the climate.

Time to go south- east or west.

After I finish the great enclave/mancave, I may just buy a small house in the same city, sell the big one in the suburbs and buy a condo in GA or FL.

Or maybe take a possible job in AL near Huntsville and move everything there. No more having to wait before I can work on the cars or build the garage, because of the weather, which has really set back my plans this year.

Nothing like the southeast during this time of year. This is a shot off my porch looking back towards where I am building the shop (~1/4 mile down the driveway from the house).

An aging population leaving the north and northeast is not unexpected, I guess.

There are projections that within a few years, states like Georgia, Texas and Arizona will have populations where minorities, if counted together, will be the numerical majority. It may take awhile for Texas or Arizona to become a "swing state" though.

I migrated west many years ago, the northeastern US is too crowded and too expensive. The southeast is very inexpensive, but not someplace I would really want to live (I'm in the middle of NC at the moment); it's just a little too far behind the curve. I'm done living east of the Mississippi.

Yup! And it's slated to get worse as they raise taxes on anything and everything to cover the budget deficits.

If it weren't for business and community ties (almost 120 years now), we'd close up shop and move somewhere else. But we feel such a strong connection to the area that we suck it up and deal with it. We'll just have to see how much worse it gets. As we continue to expand south and west, relocating to a more central location may become more attractive.

My father, now 67 and just delving into semi-retirement, is on the lookout for a retirement address. He really has no desire to leave CT, it just doesn't make any financial sense to retire here.

Heh! Thought you were referencing NEbraska! That's (3) cogent reasons why I'm not there either!

Exactly. I moved from Georgia in 2004 and I think it would take an act of Congress to get me to relocate east of Denver at this point.
