carfax question.....
ive decided to sell a jaguar of mine. its a 1998 xk8 convertible. i have only 14,000 miles.
when i registered it in florida here, after i moved, the car had 9,300 miles in 2004. the state typed in 93,000. obviously raising questions. can i fix this? i am the original owner, and have all paperwork. am i screwed? heres a link to my ad, i mean cant one tell it obviously doesnt have high milage? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-XK-XK8-1998-Jaguar-XK8-2D-Convertible-MINT-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a648c9d63QQitemZ250795040099QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks

Back in the day when it was not illegal for the individual to roll odometers, a 93K miled car could become a 33K miles car. But it had better look it. Does your car look like a 14K miles car, and is there any way you can document it?
It is not out of the realm of possibility that a car less than even 2.5 years old, can accumulate 93K or over 100K miles on it, even when bought new. I've done it several times on cars I bought brand new. I think you have an uphill battle cut out for you in getting the authorities to 'roll it back' to the mileage you say it has on it, if you will. Your story reminds us ALL to have a look at our documents back from the state, when registering a vehicle. Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 03-29-2011 at 12:54 AM. |

Go to the state of florida, see if they'll reissue your title but I warn you. your going to need a hell of a lot of documentation to prove the milage and their screwup. my opinion. your over a barrel on this one.

I've had numerous clerical errors like that and unfortunately never saw a way to fix it.
Ebay is not going to be a good venue for you, since the first thing they sell is the odometer fraud warning. Most will just stop right there.

Anything over 15 years old in Colorado they usually mark mileage as "E" for exceeds mechanical limits, even if the previous title is marked with actual mileage. I don't know the reasoning. Doesn't really affect CarFax, as they still pull from the emissions place. And when you register the car, they allow you to state mileage, which also goes into CarFax, but they won't allow it to be on the title for whatever reason.

when i titled my focus this winter they asked me milage and i didn.t know the exact miles but remembered the numbers so i said it was 252,000 when i get home i checked and it said 225,000,i figured i'll have it longer then that so it doesn't really bother me,but if i wanted to i could have went to the junkyard and got a speedo with say 70-80k miles and replaced it as the miles are in the cluster not the computer.it was a one owner car and when you register every year you don't give miles and iowa doesn't have emissions checks so the dmv would have never known.

this typo happened when i moved here to fla in 2004. i guess just for the reason of selling, i went through my paperwork and found reciepts from 2003-2005 showing milage on all of them, this way it will all pan out sooner or later. carfax is a PITA.

Carfax does not have mileage increments on most of the events recorded on cars that I shop. So, it won't necessarily help your case, nor does it always reflect mileage events.

Hotel room in Splendorous Talahassee
Go by your DHSMV office and speak to one of the agents in person, first.
(You MAY be pleasantly surprised!) http://www.taxcollector.com/services_driver_license_state_office.asp I've ALWAYS gone to the Seat of Illiteracy (Capital)for each state [Fl,Ga.] WHENEVER there was a "Notational Incident" with a Title/Application. (Fla's easier than Ga.) S.C. is the easiest. (Personal Un-Solicited Opine: Anybody who views Info in A Carfax as being other than a Mildly Amusing Representation of Fact,is Asking For It.)
