Random Misfire : Chevy Aveo

I have another issue with this stupid car. My step dad called me and said the car would not start. It cranks but no fire. Awesome, so I leave my physics lab to go take care of it.

Get there and I can't see anything visually wrong with it. Rented a scanner from autozone and I got codes

P0300
P0420

P0300 is a random cylinder misfire
P0420 is something with the catalyst( replaced 20k ago after it decided to go into melt down mode)

So, I have no idea what to do. I'm on a forum for the aveo trying to find answers and they vary from burnt valves to a bad ignition coil.

anyone have any insight or knowledge?

Sounds like a coil if that motor has only one. If it has multiple coil's you can rule that out, than I would think maybe a crank position sensor. First thing I would do is pull out a plug, have someone crank it and see if your getting a spark.

Unless the cat is plugged the car should still run.

The car was running fine this morning. It's stuck at my step dads place of work. I left it there since I did not have tools or knowledge of what to do.

i'd check for spark also, and if none i'd look into the module,it is usually under the coil pack if it has one.

I'm going to rent a timing light tomorrow and check for spark as well as remove the timing belt cover and pray it didn't snap

It couldn't have since my step dad drove it to work, parked it and that was that

Question, how do I check for burned valves? Compression test?

If it just didn't start like that its not a burned valve, its something electronic.

My experience with burnt valve (exhaust). CEL goes on, runs rough when cold, then runs consistently like sh$t. It happened over the period of months, not 12 hours. A compression test told me it was time for a fresh head.

Snapped the timing belt. Hopefully while cranking. . He drove it to work. Parked. Then got in and cranked and no start.

Damage would be done by cranking too. Have fun car shopping (that is I hope that's what you're doing rather than throwing money into this pile)

What? Someone stole the Aveo and took it to an isolated area and set it on fire? Oh that sucks.

Can't parents cant afford a new or used car, etc etc etc. It's been a good car regardless. no one listens to me when I tell them the timing belt has to be done I guess I need one of those fancy certificates for people to listen to me.. .

The number 3 cylinder had 75% sealing which leads to believe it bent, however there is a TSB on the car about improperly sealing valves which was issued in '07 and requires all valves to be replaced. The cat meltdown happened 2 years ago in '09. The dealership never mentioned that TSB to my parents apparently. There had to be a serious issue with the engine for the cat to randomly get plugged and melt everything.

Charles, the tech/mechanic, I took the car to is removing the head and sending it out for the valve job and etc.

unless you have a car for free, there is nothing else I can do.. I'm not graced with parents and or grandparents that have a nice bank account that can take care of lifes little issues that arise.
