round here we just hunt near the road so we can plug the spot light in the truck, or just use the headlights...... just kidding

I think that the $30 price point is going to be the killer. You cant judge what good stuff will cost from Harbor Freight and Walmart. Battery technology is expensive. I have a Dewalt light that uses the drill batteries. Not quite a spot light but OK for me and it will work on my otherwise useless batteries that wont run the drill anymore. They now have Litium 18V batteries that will plug into the 18V line for even more time.

Spot light, like a, well "spot light"? Or like a rechargeable troublelight for working?

I use one similar to the Google products that shows up with this search "black and decker rechargeable LED"

Battery life is pretty good. Light quality is adequate. Focus of beam is a bit awkward though. I've had mine for more than year and it's still good.

Re-chargable Searchlight

Keep an eye on this @ Bass Pro Shops.
It's $30.99 NOW, but usually goes on sale at least twice a year for $15.

It has a sealed Lead Acid 12V battery ,that has a substantial charge life.

Stanley is crap. They used to be "Made in USA" but they have outsourced so much their quality has gone down the toilet. They've been routinely laying off workers from their CT factory for years now. I got a Stanley rachet set cheap (awesome, so I thought) 2 years ago, first time I used it I broke the socket and second time the internal ratchet mechanism snapped. Utter junk.

I think it's easier to get a good set of HID headlights from the junkyard and a good set of rechargeable batteries than it is to get a good rechargeable spotlight.

I was given one of those Optronic lights as a gift. It lasted about 6 months before the battery took a fatal dump. I've yet to see a big spotlight in your price range that wasn't total junk.
I use flashlights every night all year long making my final outside checks before hitting the sack. I have 3 Streamlight Ultra Stingers on chargers in various locations and have bought aftermarket batteries for all of them that I rotate in and out periodically so I always have plenty of charged spares. My oldest stinger is 8 years old and has never failed me. They aren't cheap though. Amazon has the best prices for them.
Unless you're only an occasional user, you really get what you pay for with flashlights.
