Texas House OKs bill to allow 85 mph speed limit in TX

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/chronicle/7511072.html

Most people are doing 75-80 on the highways here out of habit, and I don't think they're going to go any faster just because a sign says they can. They didn't slow down when certain sections of rural highways near Houston went down to 55 from 70. I think you'll see opposition to this from the highway patrol and county sheriffs because their speeders will instead be going under the new posted limit.

If it does pass, count on a compromise involving an increase in speeding ticket fines and points assessment on such designated highways. The fine increase will mollify the speed-trap burgs, and the points increase will allow the insurers to secure more premium hikes based on driving records. Everyone wins!

Public employees should have no opposition to a proposed law. Their job is to enforce laws, not comment on them or try to block passage or resension of a law.

Public employees should have no opposition to a proposed law. Their job is to enforce laws, not comment on them or try to block passage or resension of a law.

A public employee is still a taxpayer with all the same legal rights as any other citizen, therefore, they can and do object to proposed law changes based on how it will affect them personally and at their job.

essentially, anyone including public employees can object to proposed law, but once in effect, they must uphold it. Even then they still have the right to object to it, as long as they still act in accordance with it.

What you are talking about is basically limiting free speech for anyone who works for the government in some capacity.

Cool that means you can do 95-100 and not get pinched to bad. Around here I always try to be 10-15 over.

Funny, most of the time I am in the right lane doing the limit or 5 under. I drive a lot of miles and my exposure is just too high to play against the odds. That said, I think it is a perfectly good idea for a place like Texas where the roads and flat/straight and it is a good distance between places. I would do 85 in my big MBs without a second thought. My truck, not so much so. Plus I would have to tow a tanker just to fuel the big flying brick!

Later in the trip we're cooking along at over 85mph on I10 in the TurboBenz's SD when we see some road kill but with everything in Texas, its not a skunk or a raccoon, its a Deer! we looked at each other and agreed that maybe the cattle guard is a requirement in Texas.

An 85 mph speed limit is not out of the question. There is a whole lot of nothing between towns in TX. Traffic is nonexistent, and as long as you don't hit a deer at those speeds it really is a safe to travel that fast.

And AZ, and NM and NV and basically the whole of the western states. The geriatric speed limits here really tick me off. I figure easterners can crawl along at 55 or so if they want but out west it should be way higher.

Provided that the states also mandate suitable vehicle inspections and driver education and testing, higher speed limits can work in parts of the US.

This is not a bad idea. The max speed limit in NV is 75. There are quite a few places where there probably shouldn't even be a speed limit. I've been on I80 out near Wendover doing 95 and still getting passed-by semis!

It's been a while since I've driven that stretch, but it was 70 and enforced at 70 the last time I tried. NM had 75 on the two lane, TX lowered it to 70 on the four lane. There's a speed trap just past Kerrville where the cop does nothing but change directions and give tickets.
