New landlord asking for SS Card

My new landlord is asking for a copy of my Social Security card, as well as a copy of my drivers license. I'm okay with giving the copy of the DL, but the SS card I'm not comfortable with.

Is this an odd request on their part or am I just being paranoid?

That is an odd request. See whether they can get by with just the last four digits of your social security number.

If I was a landlord, I'd consider it too.

Too many people problems everywhere, but more so in the southern "border" states.

The house behind me was rented out to some damn crack head, he and all the associated crack trash are gone now, but the landlord should have vetted his renters better.

I work for a collection agency and the SSN is the single most valuable piece of information we can have to track down delinquent debtors who are trying to avoid paying.

Let me clarify. I definitely ask for tenants social security numbers for the reason that Dee8go points out and because you need a SS number to run a credit check. I don't ask for copies of the SS card.

You need the number not the card. This way it makes it easier to go after them if they stop paying.

One of my uncles is doing that, he is going after some deadbeat renters for 8 months in back rent.

Usually, your ss # is on your drivers liscense. If its not, I would ask for SS#.

Most states have moved away from using the number on the state driver's license due to identity theft issues. Apparently it's quite easy to lose a driver's license.

In other (non-collection) contexts, I have found that people can get by with just the last four digits of the SSN. Is that not enough to run a credit check?
