That was one hell of a war for far too many people. Disrupted far too many lives and families.The only upside is it directly changed the economic circumstances of north america for quite awhile afterwards. The post war effect lasted far longer than anyone may have suspected it would.
We seem to be reaching the stage of needing something again. A war on this scale is no longer an option for anyone. If the atomic bomb as mentioned had been developed earlier by the allied side it may have shortened it by a few years. In my opinion it was a close enough call anyways. If the russians had not fought hard we may have easily lost. So my weapon of choice would have been to ship good military products to the russians in much greater quantities than we did. It may have reduced their horrific losses compared to ours.

Lets have some fun, I'll play Germany in this game of what if:
Its 1940, France has just fallen, I off Hitler and take command of the Wehrmacht where do I go next? Invading England is unlikely because of the British fleet, the Luftwaffe won't be able to stop a determined attack and losses will be heavy. So I would look south.  Lets whip out the map, my strategic goals are oil, and the removal of the British threat from the med, securing my southern flank for a later Russian adventure. I would quickly used the Hermann Goering's Luftwaffe parachute divisions to occupy Crete and Malta. I would also merge OKH and OKW into a unified command and put them to work ASAP on driving the British out of Greece and the low countries, this attack would happen at the same time as we seized the islands. Next I would put a very capable leader in charge of designing a plan to drive some motorized divisions into Iraq, capturing the Suez canal etc. I would tap Manstein to lead this and put him in command of all German forces in the Mediterranean theater. I would provide him with at least a Panzer corps or two, I would think the 7th, 10th, 21st, 2nd SS Das Reich and 1st SS Adolf Hitler divisions would be acceptable. Maybe with the 87th infantry, although they are horse drawn so they would be relegated to garrison duty. They would need some Panzergrenadier divisions to keep up, probably the 3rd, 14th, 29th, and the elite Großdeutschland division. These could be fast attack groups to drive around the British in the desert. I would form them into two army groups, lets call them Afrika Army Group East and Afrika Army Group West. West would be responsible for Gibraltar and security along the Atlantic coast. I would put Field Marshel von Leeb in charge of this Corps and I would give him one panzer division the 10th, the 87th infantry, and the 3rd. On completion of their assignment the 10th would be detached and replaced with a new infantry division. Army Group East would be where all the action would take place, I would place Von Kluge in charge of it, and I would give the two Corps to Rommel and Guderian, two of the more aggressive tank drivers out their. Guderian would be in charge of the Panzer Group Guderian, which would consist of: 21st Panzer 1st SS Adolf Hitler 2nd SS Das Reich 14th Panzergrenadier Großdeutschland Rommel would get the 15th Panzer Corps: 7th Panzer 10th Panzer (when detached from the west) 3rd Panzergrenadier 29th Panzergrenadier Guderian's Group would be the main heavy striking force and their goal would be to drive through British defenses until they captured the Suez canal, and Cairo, than onto the rich oil fields of the Middle East. Rommel's group would have the same goal, competition is good.  The goal would be to mop up operations in the Middle East by the end of 1941 which would be very reasonable considering the weak British forces available to defend it. Than I would park a Panzer corps close to India for a bit to make them sweat. This would make a major sea invasion anywhere by the British unlikely because they would see the need to rob troops to defend India. To further give the impression of an attack on India would send some light attack groups across the boarder to stir things up, and treat the preparations for the attack on Russia like I was going to invade India. Than I would probably give Russia a try but only if certain criteria are met: 1. The US stays out of the war against Germany. 2. I secure a treaty with the Japanese to assist in the attack with their Kwantung army up from Manchuria. (the goal would be to tie forces down in the east) 3. A comprehensive plan for a direct drive on Moscow, IE Army Group South would be greatly reduced and Army Group Center would be strengthened. 4. The attack would have to start no later than May 1st. With that I think the Soviet nut could be cracked.
