Good, a less costly way to do the same job.

Seems premature, I would think a good investment I'm jamming tech and satelite countermeasures would cripple a piloless system

By the time a plane and the technology get to this point I would think that the designers have pretty well gotten the jamming problem solved.

I have heard for quite a while that the newest generation of jets coming out now will be the last to be piloted by a human - because the plane is capable of so much more than a human body can take in terms of gees.

In the first pic you can see a LRIP F35 waiting to takeoff from Edwards. Its the next MANNED fighter for the USAF, Navy and Marines.

They're a long way from eliminating the pilot completely. Maybe in 50 years or more.

There are a lot of people trying to secure the internet yet how safe is it from a determined hacker. Imagine the catastrophy of a unmanned aiirforce if some smart guy gets lucky. Its foolish to think we are smarter than everyone else. We would have trillions tied up in a system that could be defeated by simply disrepting comms

We will continue to use drones, but not exclusively for some time. There is NO way, with current technology, to replace a human's insight into how a machine is acting. Yes, there are plenty of sensors on board these planes, but only a human can decide what the small vibration may be.

I work in a highly automated field, and humans are used to monitor sound, not just by use of a microphone either.

Bad idea makes wars to cheap. Nothing good will come out of this.

Yet another episode . . . "A Taste of Armageddon"

Memorable quotes for
"Star Trek" A Taste of Armageddon (1967)

Scotty: The best diplomat I know is a fully activated phaser bank.

Spock: Sir, there is a multi-legged creature crawling on your shoulder.

Scotty: Aye, the haggis is in the fire for sure.

every time I read one of these articles I think of "A Taste of Armageddon"

not sure what is better for civilization, people getting killed by faceless drowns or having to send our military into harms way.

I worry removing the human element will make war so cheap and easy it will increase not decrease. standing at the hot end of a drowns muzzle is not a place I want to be, I'd rather take my chances with a living breathing soldier pointing a weapon at me... if I had to choose.

In the mean time, say hello to the USAF's 2 main line fighters for at least the next 30 years.

That thought comes to me all the time also. There is something a tad sci-fi creepy about us being able to incinerate people in remote places with the 'pilot' safely tucked in 6-8 thousand miles away.

OTOH, I hear reports about Qaddafi shelling ships that come in to try to round up the severly injured and I think 'jeez, I wish we had some drones up there that could spot the source of that artillery and mortar fire and obliterate it.'

It's a strange world we're moving into.
