Why I wuv Weezianna
Despite the heat, snakes, bushes, ants, spiders, scorpions, Fort Polk and about 6000 other things I hate about Louisiana I still lover the people. I fully support the right to protest but I also support a persons right a disagree with the protesters.
"Go to hell hippie, go to hell" LOL http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20062371-504083.html (CBS/AP) - A mob of protesters chased a would-be flag burner off the Louisiana State University campus Wednesday, ending the display before it began. LSU graduate student Benjamin Haas had originally planned to burn an American flag reportedly in response to the recent arrest of another LSU student who stole and burning a flag from a war memorial. Instead, Haas agreed to read a statement. |

I saw that, too. My beef is that the kid (reportedly) said he was planning to burn the flag in support of another kid who stole the flag at the LSU Veterans' Memorial. Their mothers must be so proud.

Ants, man I hated those ants!
Flag burning has got to be the weirdest protest. How do you show your anger? Burn the flag. How do you properly dispose of a worn one? Burn the flag! Somehow it just doesn't carry the same effect as other ways to complain (or to use the correct phrasing, "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.") Then again some folks are just stupid and looking to make people mad. Instead the people should just turn around and ignore these folks, thus depriving them of the audience and publicity they seek. |

I believe the proper way to dispose of the flag is by ceremonial burning. In which the field of stars is separated from the stripes thus rendering it no longer a symbol of the United States of America. Then it is burned with respect and dignity.

Born and raised in Mandeville, LA, right on the lake. Wonderful place to grow up.

Sometimes an angry mob is just what you need.

I do agree that flag burning as a protest is weaker than weak.

What I thought the interesting part in this whole thing was the fact that the kid (FU2) trying to burn the flag was SUPPORTING another fuc8up (FU1) that stole a flag, from a war memorial, and was attempting to burn that too.
1st Question: Lame-@55 FU1...why didn't he go out and buy his own flag to burn? 2nd Q: What was FU1 protesting anyway? Why there weren't free flags available for burning? 3rd Q: What was FU2 doing burning a flag for anyways? His butt-buddy getting caught trying to burn evidence in a property-theft case? 4th Q: LSU is going to give graduate-student FU2 a graduate degree? In what? Fuzzy Logic? What's logical about standing in the middle of highly-charged Patriots and burning a Patriotic Symbol in the hopes of swaying the masses over to your Fuzzy Logical way of thinking that the burning flag is going to swing the tide in favor of your favorite brand of Kool-Aid, about a thief desecrating a War Memorial by stealing a Patrotic Symbol and buring it for some un-known/who-cares-to-give-a-***** cause? What part of the former made ANY SENSE? FU1 needs a few weeks on a roadside chain-gang (if they still exist down there), picking up trash... FU2 needs a few "size 12s" up his back side and a rep from the college to tell him "Sorry Charlie! You lost the ability to complete your graduate work on this campus." I'm hoping there are some "brass ones" down there that can handle that task. But then, the "green" from the wallet always does manage to sway proper decisions from their due course.

I'm kind of a First Amendment guy. I think that flag burning is a viable form of expression. Apparently the counter-demonstrators were also expressing themselves in a vigorous fashion.
Go free speech! |
