BMW E36 turn signals

My cousin's E36 (97 M3) left turn indicators are stuck on since the car was jump started. They stay illuminated, not flashing, when the stalk is in left turn or neutral with the key in the on/run position. I don't know what happens when the stalk is in the right turn position. I suspect jump start fried the signal module. I see some discussion in the BMW forums but nothing that leads to a cause or remedy. Any thoughts on diagnosis and repair?
