Interesting Find
I was at my Mother-in-Law's house one day last week and saw an unusual stone in the gravel next to her drive. It's black, relatively smooth, has dished, concave surfaces/facets on several sides and is unlike any rock I've seen around here (almost all native stone is a red iron ore sandstone). This thing must not be iron because it doesn't have any magnetic properties...ie, doesn't deflect a compass when placed close by.
For some unknown reason, it made me think of a meteorite...Googling for pictures of meteorites came back with some that are called chondrite which look similar. So, I'm thinking that this thing may actually be an extraterrestrial visitor.

Looks kind of like a hand axe, doesn't it?

Yep, except that it's not flint.
The depression in the top is almost exactly thumb-sized but there are no working marks like I've seen in fist-axes (we used to hunt arrowheads when I was a kid).

How about a hammer stone?

Perhaps came to the driveway with a load of riverbed gravel years ago. It does have the appearance of water worn.

I'm not saying that it fell out of the sky onto her driveway. There's no telling where it originated. It's just that by the appearance, it looks like it could be a chontrite.

Hmmm, mother-in-law's driveway? Might be father-in-law's. Divorced by any chance? The In-laws, I mean.
"Stone-axe"? "Hammer stone"? For what? An ancient hamster civilization? |

Looks very much like a rock that was in the river or ocean

Could very well be. Our little town has been hit my 2 meteorites within a 11 year span, last in '82. Here's a pic of the last one, that's now in the Peabody Museum at Yale. Can definitely see some similarities.

The gov't put it there - it's a trap. Wrap it in tinfoil and put it back immediately.

Certainly interesting looking to my untrained eye. Maybe a meteorite, or maybe not... Would be interesting to know for sure.

Who can you ask? I suppose if it's really a meteorite fragment you'll be getting a visit from men in black.
