I killed a Toyota Diesel today

Or, should I say...put it out of its misery.
Rented a lt. truck..(the old Toyota), to remove debris from an arcade we are remodeling. The lorrie was old, run down, tired, no power...obviously abused during its life as a rental.
So...I decided it was time for it to be retired, and sent to the crusher.
Had my guys load the old girl twice the capacity for its load rate...took her out on the high-way...selected third gear...mashed the accelerator..held it there for 18 minutes, until....BOOM, BAM....SHHHHHHssss..

May she rest in peace.

Help me here. You rented a truck and then purposely destroyed it? If you owned it, fine, but the focus for almost all of the people on this forum is to keep their diesels running as long as possible. I propose this post be moved to OD.

chilcutt spends most of his time in OD . Looks like it must be too quiet there at the moment.
Maybe he could give us a breakdown on what happened to the motor.
Piston out the side of the block?
Big puddle of oil under it?
Did it still run at all?
Lots of smoke out the tail pipe?
Bad knock?
Good candidate for a WVO conversion ?

This qualifies as simply willfully destroying a vehicle on the same lines as jackass, or lots of skateboarding videos, not "putting it out of its misery". With the same mindset, you can "put out of its misery" any vehicle of any age or mileage, if you set out to destroy it.

What a pointless waste for no better reason than you were apparently bored. And also, why would you add that PITA to your work day?

I would have just used the truck properly, then returned it. Rather than try and destroy it and make my own job harder with the remodeling job. Silly

Yeah, its disrespectful, jackass, impulsory, decisions/actions, like this, that people make, to cause companies to have to raise rates and pass on higher prices for the rest of us to absorb when we rent, insure, and simply try to survive. If the equipment was old and lacking maintenance and it knocked itself out on its own free-will thats one thing. But, advertising this sort of thing exemplifies a lack of good character and integrity that unfortunately leaves the rest of us with the burden of carrying on our backs.
That being said, I hope that when I am tired, worn out, and determined to go off for scrap, by others (seems to be alot of talk about outliving one's usefulness, lately), there is not a jackass in charge of whether I go to the right or to the left, so to speak.

This is the kind of thing I wouldn't post online even if I HAD done it. There's gotta be something in the rental contract about only using the equipment in an appropriate manner... if their lawyers run across this, I suspect it could be used as evidence. Not to mention, it doesn't exactly make me want to loan you any of my tools next time you need them..... I say that only because I figure most people reading it have the same reaction.

now everybody wait...

he says he "put it out of it's misery"

it's possible he did it actually trying to use the truck, and it just died.

it's not like it's a unimog or a ponton MB or anything.

however, if he REALLY put as much into the truck as he could think of, purposefully to blow the vehicle, then yeah... cruel.

OP, report on your intentions, and reality of the situation please.

The engine was obviously poorly maintained, and would have expired sooner or later, regardless of what I did or didnt do.

So now, the engine will be pulled out...rebuilt...and placed in another vehicle. (which is what should have been done along time ago.) It will live again, just in another vehicle.

As for the body..it will be sent to the crusher, as Singapore has strict rules concerning old vehicles that are poorly maintained.

The point is. I didnt appreciate the way the rental company had treated this diesel during its lifetime, and would rather see it rebuilt, as opposed to having it continually abused.

Layback...It didnt throw a rod ,or anything drastic...it just heaved...lost power..and stopped running.

Its funny how some folks can draw conclusions without having more info provided, and call someone names...but Thats human nature.
