Anyone ever rebuild a pressure washer..?
I bought an expensive rebuild kit for an older Craftsman washer. I took the pump apart and replaced nearly every seal. Put it back together and it still does not build pressure.

Gas or electric? Is it the kind that has a seperate motor (direct drive or belt) and pump? I don't have much experience with craftsman stuff, but more comet, general, etc (professional grade). Was it leaking on the outside of the pump before the rebuild, or just not builiding pressure?

It is a gas powered with pump attached at bottom of vertical shaft. I am not sure what it was doing before I attempted the rebuild. It was given to my father about 5 yrs ago. I suspected it was ran without water being turned on.
It leaks at pump from various places when trigger not pulled. Leaking slows when trigger is pulled but nozzle has no pressure.

Me too...
I have a Karcher pump with a Honda gas engine (Costco) that has a similar problem. The pressure comes and goes - it usually starts out good but I have to keep squeezing the trigger because if I letup it will never presssure up again.
I called a rebuild shop locally and they tell me that there is a 'spool valve' that goes out that should be rebuilt/replaced - they quoted me ~ $60. I've been limping along for a while but I'll need to do it eventually. Call your local shop and see what they say about the service/rebuild. Good luck - James

Many times, what happens is that people leave water in them over the Winter and it freezes, cracking the pump apart in multiple locations. Easiest thing to do is suck a little anti-freeze into the injection port prior to putting it away for the Winter.
Here's a pretty decent pump for cheap: (cheap being a relative term...) http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200305966_200305966

In almost all cases the "spool" valve is bad. It allows the pump to keep running even when you don't have the trigger on and spraying. Where would all the water go, if not back around the pump. Not too hard to find on most models. It's sort of like a reversed check valve.
