Exhaust headers for Ford truck....

Exhuast manifolds are leaking on the '97 Expedition. They dealer quoted me $1700 for replacement. I won't even go into how I responded. Anyway, I was thinking of putting headers in place. Anyone have a late model Ford truck with 5.4L with Headers?

Make sure they have JetHot coating so they will last. Headers that aren't coated do not last more than a few years. Spend the extra money. You will be happy in the long run.

another way is to take them to a welding shop have them welded and the bearing surface milled flat.A friend had that done on his Ford with the 300 six witch was notorious for cracked and warped exhaust
manifolds...........

If its cracked, a good welder can weld it up & it will last.
The newer welding materials are such that things like exhaust manifolds can be fixed. We repaired a tractor manifold many years ago & it has a turbo. It is nearly now due for a motor rebuild.

Just an FYI- I just hit an OEM Ford parts website and priced factory exhaust manifolds and gaskets at about $500. If you want headers for performance purposes, fine. But if you are looking just to replace defective parts with the most economical alternative...

I'll bet that a fair chunk of that $1,700 estimate is for labor. I had a 4.6 triton in my 1999 Expedition, and component accessibility wasn't its strong suit.

I'm certainly not a Ford truck expert, and haven't owned a gas vehicle in years, but a recent ebay buyer came to pick something up in his '02 F150 with the 5.4 engine. He had the manifold problem, and had it fixed proactively before the studs started to break. He installed some type of expensive header system and really swore by it.
