Don's car Follies

I swear I am a magnet for cars that like to break.

My mom's equinox lost power this morning while she was driving home from dropping my brother off. I go to the rescue and it wont fire..Cranks, but no fire.. Awesome

I check the fuses and the one for the fuel pump is blown.. hmmm thats not a good sign. Replace it, no start. Pump must be dead. Truck has 105k miles on it.

Tow it to my mechanic. Special note, if the person on the phone doesn't ask for an address after you tell them the area its going to and you are about to give it to them, forcibly give them the address so the tow truck driver isn't mad.

So, its now at my mechanic for non Mercedes cars. I could have towed it home and it's probably the fuel pump but I dont want to risk it not being that and having to then tow it there anyways.

The underlying cause would not be a car voodoo bad luck but having/buying those POSes in the first place! FP is not unusual to go, but if it blew the fuse you probably have a short somewhere and thats not good....

I have been reading online on the equinox forum and through google/yahoo answers that when the pump goes a tell tale sign is the fuse blowing and then once replacing the fuse a crank but no start situation.

My mechanic even said that. So fingers crossed! The engine is the good ole bullet proof 3.4L pushrod V6 thats been around forever and oil changes have always been done on time.

What year? After about 2005 GM did away with fuel filters so the pump just kind of blows.

At least its a Chevy so it should be pretty cheap to fix.

My running costs are about 1/10 of my friends G500 at the same mileage.

Probably, drop the tank, what like $400-$600 to change?

Do the plugs yet at 105k they are due.

Your going to pay $500 or more for the canister assembly and labor to put it in. The pump itself costs $80, and if your sending unit is still good, there's no reason to replace that entire unit...

I looked at rock auto for the pump and it comes all as an assembly. Plugs, totally need to be done.

Yes, but...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Walbro-GCA3388-2-190-lph-In-tank-Fuel-Pump-Filter-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem41521821aaQQitemZ280550187434QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries

That is the failed part, one must do some intelligent disassembly to replace ONLY the failed part, thus replacing the entire unit is more common and profitable.

Your labor rates may vary...

The fuel pump on rock auto was not anywhere near $600. Sigh, I should have just towed it to my house.

Just picked up the truck. Turns out the connector for the fuel pump relay under the fuse box worked its way loose causing all sorts of weird issues. The windows had refused to go up, the alarm was going off on the tow truck when it was dropped off. But its all back to normal now. Cost a lot less than a fuel pump
