Le Mans 24 Hour - Video: McNish survives horror crash

The official race website said the Scot, who stepped out of the wreckage unaided, was unhurt but taken to the circuit medical centre for precautionary checks.
The safety car was deployed after the accident involving the number three Audi R18 and the Ferrari 458 driven by Anthony Beltoise, with German Timo Bernhard leading the race in the number one Audi.
The number two Audi driven by Frenchman Benoit Treluyer was in second place.
McNish had been challenging Bernhard, overtaking his team mate after the Dunlop Bridge but then clipping the slower Ferrari.
The Audi, which McNish was sharing with Denmark's Tom Kristensen and Italian Rinaldo Capello, was launched sideways into the gravel trap and nearly cleared the barriers with bodywork flying.
Eighty-four people were killed at the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours when a car went into the crowd - it remains the worst disaster in motorsport history.
"The Ferrari closed the door, Allan had no chance whatsoever. He went off very quickly, but luckily managed to get out of the car unharmed," said Audi motorsport head Wolfgang Ullrich.
"To see that the cars are so strong is good, but that's not the way we like to demonstrate it."
Audi, in a battle with French rivals Peugeot, have won six of the last seven editions of the race and swept the front row in qualifying with Treluyer on pole and the number one Audi alongside.
The famous endurance race began at 2pm UK time on Saturday, finishing at the same time on Sunday.

You tube link works fine also.

Here is the thing I don't get. Why do people sit on the outside of an out side turn. I'm not a physics major but if someone wipe out on a turn, they are going to take out anyone on the outside of that turn much more likely than the inside of a turn. Seems like a dumb place to stand if you ask me.

Thanks guys, Youtube video watched. Bad choice of a place to pass on the inside. I'm glad everybody walked away.

Speaking of where to watch on turns, I was walking to the store the other night, approaching the intersection of the one of the main roads in town (25 zone) and a little side street (also a 25). About that time, two brain donors in Honda CRX's were racing each other and happened to take the turn that I was approaching. They made it, but if they had cut it an inch closer they might have jumped the curb and turned me into road pizza. So, there's danger on both the inside and the outside of a corner.

What an ass. McNish wasn't going to make the corner at that speed no matter what he did - so he ends up taking out the Ferrari and himself. Brilliant.

Another Audi R18 crashed too, but the third one won the whole thing! What a dramatic experience for that team

Is this your assessment from looking at the clip or did another driver make the comment who was in the race? The Ferrari looks to be a slightly modified road car while the Audi was an all out prototype.....a much faster car.

It did not look so cut and dried to me.

A dangerous pass to be sure but if not for the Ferrari I did not see it as a lost corner.

Boy, I sure did. He came into that corner HOT - way above speeds of everyone else.

Yes both inside and outside are dangerous but I think centrifical force says the outside is more dangerous.

There was no reason to try a risky pass on traffic after hour 1 of a 24 hour race. In the second accident its pretty clear that the ferrari was at fault. He even flashed his lights before passing.
