2011 Top 10 America's Filthiest Cities

Travel + Leisure Magazine's Picks.

Props to NYC for the improvement from being #1 last year . . . not serving asparagus in homeless shelters likely helped in the effort.

New Orleans is probably still cleaning up from Katrina. Philly is pretty damn dirty and smells like sewage in far too many places. That being said, I love it.

edit: the city, not the sewer smell

I'm a little surprised to see Lost Wages in the top 10. Considering how much of their economy depends on tourism you'd think they work a little harder keeping the place looking nice. I suppose they keep the tourist areas in good shape and ignore the rest. I don't really know because despite living in the same state as that place for seven years, I've never spent more than an hour and a half there.

Note: There's a bit of tension between Northern Nevada (basically everything that isn't Clark County) and Southern Nevada. It's kind of like England vs. Scotland.

LOL who actually goes to the city of LA on vacation? I can think of about 100 other places in the LA area I would rather be than the city of LA. Its just big freeway intersection with a bunch of bums living under it. If you're not west of the 405, you're wasting your time.

Walking around sober during the day in Las Vegas answers the question of how they placed, pretty easily.

Las Vegas could be clean or dirty, I would never know. I went from the airport to the casinos and back to the airport. all of the casinos I visited are connected by walkways, I stepped out into the sun one time the whole week and it was like 150 degrees........

That's what happens when you build a city around a sewer called the Los Angeles River.

not long ago, I overheard some frat boys (at Ohio University no less- a good party school) saying:
"yeah, New Orleans is a good time, but MAN that place is dirty...we left after 3 days..."

and if the frat boys think its dirty...

(no general offense intended to fraternity/sorority members, but if there was a stereotype of such, these dudes were it)

Gawd I hate Las Vegaas- what a POS city.

NOLA is awesome! History, architecture, wonderful music, nice people, great food and drink, friendly strippers. I've been there 3X. Last time I met up with Botnst and John Doe, crazy time.

Was a cop in Baltimore for 30 years. No argument about #6, just surprised it wasn't higher.

New Orleans was a dump before Katrina, way before.

It's that my girlfriend lives in Venice Beach otherwise I would avoid it as the plague; it's the biggest dump and most depressing place in Los Angeles: Bump heaven, if there is one.

I'd just as soon avoid the LA area completely. I don't know what it is about it, but I just don't like it there.

Too dry.

Fungi, insects and vermin require water.

OTOH, I have smelled some gawd-offal 3rd world desert cities, but they seem to think that the city limits is where the sewage and refuse begin.
