What does white smoke indicate - unburned fuel, dirty injectors, or stuck rings, right?

Yup.
The generator is only 6kw. How much repair time per kw are you willing to expend?

I guess I haven't been keeping up. Do you need a generator for day to day electricity?
Have you got a line on a parts source for this generator?

You could gut it, and stick one of those mercedes diesels in it you find in Thermoking cooling units. all the stuff is there, I'm sure you could pull it off.

Unless it is worth more than the asking price in scrap value I wouldn't bother. White smoke usually indicates air in the fuel lines, but it can also be other really bad things. There is a reason that Chinese junk is so cheap- I have tried it all and never beat the system. What is the application you need a generator for? I do a lot of generator installs so I could recommend something for you if I know your needs.
