I got a text earlier while at work from both my mom and sister saying that our dog, 18 year old poodle, was sprawled out in the yard not moving. Great, just great.

I don't know whats going on, I'm at work, I'm worried.

I get home and see Reno in his bed with a blanket and my sister is petting him. He is looking ok but he just looks sad. I go spend some time with him and my mom tells me he isn't walking. He can stand but he can't/wont walk.

I don't know what to do. I know if we take him to the vet they are going to tell us to put him down. He's not whimpering or showing signs of pain. But I'm just really upset right now

Probably had a seizure man, sorry to hear it. 18 years old, that is an ancient dog and it sounds like it had a good run.

My mom thinks that he might have had a stroke.

Googling it really doesnt help at all.. Because the more I read, the more it is clear. I think he did have a stroke. I'm not a vet but maybe he did.

The nearest emergency vet is 35 miles away, same one I took my cockatiel too when I found him at the bottom of his cage. I can't do it.. I can't..

Bunmmer.....I've never actually seen a dog live that long before. Yeah...they are a member of the family. Hurts when they are gone for sure. But today wasn't that day.

Sporry to hear about the dog.

Dogs do recover from strokes, then they move a lot slower.

He might recover woith a lot of rest.
What happens is they starve or get no water and die.
Keep feeding the dog in small amounts and give thye dog water for a couple days and if the stroke is mild, he might be ok, but it will be a slow recovery, might take a month.

I had a dog who did the same thing and lived two years more. Died at 20

Are you keeping the dog alive to make you happy or the dog? If he's suffering, it's time to let him go. My condolences...

No, it's going to happen. My mom is about to go give him a bath and make him look not so scraggly.

It's time to let him go Don. I know how you feel man. A few months ago I had to put my 17 yo cat "Jones" to sleep, it's was the humane thing to do. :(

So, it wasn't a stroke since he isn't showing signs of post stroke-ness.

He's had issues walking for a while so it is possible he fell and couldn't get up and the heat didn't help. Right now he is doing well, eating and drinking.

It's not my decision to bring him in. It's a family matter and everyone else thinks he is better. I'm the only one actually on the fence

As much as I rag on my pets I would be really upset if anything ever happened to them.

If you don't want to take him to the vet it's ok to let someone else do it.

How's Reno? It's no fun to put a pet down, but sometimes it's the humane thing to do. I've been there, man -- it sucks, and I miss my dog Felix terribly. He was really special. If the time comes, I hope you can be there; while it's incredibly difficult, it would be more difficult (I think) to know that your old friend passed on w/o you there to comfort him.

More than anything, I hope he just had a bad week and is back in the saddle now.
