Car shopping.. but not for me

I'm helping my girlfriend look for a new(er) car to replace her aging '97 malibu that needs to be replaced. The transmission slips(its a no fill type), exterior and interior need lots of love, it needs tires and suspension work. So the best thing to do other than pour money into it is look for something to replace it.

She was talking about getting a Honda of some sorts. I talked to Tyler and he suggested looking at Acura's as well. I'd love for her to get a W124 300D .

So, she has a budget of $5k(but if something suitable isn't found she might be willing to increase). Need to try and stay in FL for the car but if its the right one might have to ship it.

Bring on the recommendations.

Some criteria

rear window defrost( the 'bu doesn't have it!)
CD player
reliable, well taken care of.
preferably not black (finding a car in yellow or orange will be difficult)
good MPG's

$5k? Keep it simple: Civic or Corolla.

There really isnt much to critique.
Which company has the highest sales in automobile/motorcycles in the world.?
Why do you think this is?

well, what should I look for in a civic? What to look out for, etc? If it was a Mercedes w124 diesel with 200k on it, with records, and preventive maintenance done I'd have no issues putting her in the car. But I don't know honda's as well as I know these cars.

Simple: does the vehichle look clean and well maintained?

Smell the transmission dip-stick.

Find out if it needs an oil change.

Exchange cash- install her plates.

Fill gas tank.

Drive.....

Just assume it hasn't been done. I'd imagine it's not to bad to do / have done though.

For $5k you could buy 10 broken W126s, build one good one out of them and store the rest on blocks in the front yard for spares Get to work.

I know! But, she isn't too interested in a Mercedes. I'd love for her to get something like what I have, possibly a little newer with the 2.5L diesel

Depends - If the front of the engine is a super PITA from an access perspective, it probably makes sense to replace the water pump at the same time.
