How do you tell transmissions apart.

I have 2 automatic transmissions and they look very much alike. Is there some info on this data base that defines the casting numbers or the oil pan shape that can tell me what type and year my transmissions are?

Mercedes Casts the model on the upper pan usually 722.XX
