Drug deaths now kill more Americans than traffic fatalities

http://www.leadertelegram.com/news/daily_updates/article_28752cd0-e1ab-11e0-a4e0-001cc4c002e0.html

By Lisa Girion, Scott Glover and Doug Smith Los Angeles Times Leader-Telegram

LOS ANGELES — Propelled by an increase in prescription narcotic overdoses, drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the United States, a Los Angeles Times analysis of government data has found.

Drugs exceeded motor vehicle accidents as a cause of death in 2009, killing at least 37,485 people nationwide, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While most major causes of preventable death are declining, drugs are an exception. The death toll has doubled in the last decade, now claiming a life every 14 minutes. By contrast, traffic accidents have been dropping for decades because of huge investments in auto safety.
I read somewhere else recently that worldwide vehicle crashes kill around 3000 people per day.

It would be fun to know if people with health insurance are more likely to die from drugs than people without health insurance. Maybe we need fewer people driving and fewer people with health insurance.

I also wonder how many traffic accidents are related to people driving with heavy prescription drugs in their systems.

People are freaking out on bath salts now. Latest and greatest drug. Our local paper has been running a story about it. Nasty stuff and god only knows what's in it. What happened to good ole LSD?

Meh there are to many people around anyway, got to thin the herd one way or another.

What happened to the good old days when everyone had steak and eggs for breakfast and lunch was a burger, coffee, and a couple of cigarettes?

Absolutely. What are the odds that these people overdosing are going to turn out to be something that is more than a liability.

Drug deaths are fine so long as its in their own home and not killing anyone else in the process.

X2

Maybe we should be taking the cars from bad drivers & giving them plenty of drugs.
Kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

This is about prescription drugs more than street drugs. A lot of people think this is just one way that prescription drugs do more harm than good.

Really, the "health care" system in general does more harm than good in too many cases.

If you go beyond the recommendation, it isn't the drug that does more harm than good. It is you. Or as they say in the computer world PBKC. Problem Between Keyboard and Chair or the lUser. A drug is a drug is a drug. Much like a knife or gun. The item cannot be blamed because the lUser is an idiot. Why do we have to suffer because of them anyways? As Hattie said, it thins out an already crowded population and those that it kills are not really likely to be high functional so what is the loss? Between them dragging out existence for another few years which can cost us money and them dying today which is cheap, WGAS?

This does not sound like an informed opinion. People who blindly trust the recommendations of healthcare professionals are at risk of all manner of bad ends. Buyer beware, as always. caveat emptor

I think I've had one prescription in 30 years and that was for pain killers when I had a broken tooth capped. I might still have a couple of the pills.
