This is pretty common with hardware like these. It can take a long while for the manufacture to produce them without taking a loss; as time goes on the components get cheaper and cheaper.

Apple does the same thing:

This is why I'm using an unlocked iPhone with music not bought from Apple and either free apps or ones obtained via Cydia. Because I like Apple hardware but hate the company, so I enjoy being a (small) drag on their profit margin.

That's the Gilette plan. Give away the razor for free but sell the blades.

I'm trying to find mine (business plan) for my next venture. It'd be a pleasant surprise if in 3 years you see a headline sjh business finds way to make profit while selling at a loss.
