I'm sure that you are not saying that you're surprised by this. He's just another beaurocrat being a fat cat.

The worst of it is not that he's ripping off tax payers. The worst of it is the hogwash that these educators are injecting into the gray matter of innocent kids that aren't being supervised and taught right from wrong at home.

this is not surprising news.

the group that gets taxed the most are your garden variety 'employees' because their paycheck is automatically adjusted by their employers. Specifically, the employee gets what is left after the deductions (fica, fed, state, city taxes...etc).

My point is.....they don't have a choice.

The employer on the other hand has multiple ways (legal) to lower his 'taxable' income.

One of the biggest gimmies came from Bush called the Section 179. It allows employers to deduct 100% of the expense of item in the same year. Prior to this, he had to depreciate it over many years (MACRS, etc).

This is a BIG thing. He can buy a computer (or whatever) and basically depreciate it all in the same year to lower his taxable income. Section 179 is very broad and pretty much allows most capital expenses.

Bottom line....the little guy is still getting screwed.

It would seem that the only guy getting screwed is the little guy who works for someone else.

The little guy who starts his own little guy business could get some of this back, right? Just use the same ploys that the big guys do. No?

Except he wouldn't have enough money to hire lobbyists.

Instead of envy and jealousy, try aspiration and ambition.

When you work for someone, you always have to show a profit. Your work has to generate $2000 because I paid you $1000.

That is what Wal*Mart and Best Buy started out as. Small stores who knew how to work and worked hard to build themselves up.

When you get big enough, yes. Something to work towards.

Correct. You don't have to be a GE or an AT&T to take advantage of the rules. You can be just a sole proprietor and it would be OK.

The lobbyists are a different story.

The main difference between the business owner and employee is control.

As sole proprietor, you can control your REALIZED income as opposed to EARNED income. You only get taxed on realized income. There's a ton of ways to minimize your realized income legally. The biggies are the Section 179 expenses and the contributions to your retirement plan.

As long as you show a profit in 2 out of the last 5 years (not sure about that rule anymore), you can continue as a 'business'. This is obviously a rule to guard against hobbyists who deduct everything year after year for the sake of saving taxes while operating at a loss.

Do you really want to aspire to rip off that kind of money from a school district for god's sake?

If you are worth it, it isn't a rip off. After 2 years, there are target points to reach so if you fail, well.... If you feel you are worth $X and the employer agrees, where is the rip off? If the employer feels he can get someone as good as you for less, it is his responsibility to tell you that and either you will back down or he will go elsewhere. Because it is a school district a person should not ask for what they feel they are worth? You can ask anything you want for your car. Doesn't mean I have to pay it but if it is worth it for me, where is the rip off?

I have to agree with Kerry here. In general, I favor the capitalistic approach--life isn't fair, survival of the fittest.
In this thread, however, we are discussing a tax-funded school system that cuts at the teacher level to reward at the (petty) bureaucrat-level.
IF teaching is the main goal of an educational system,( And that is a BIG IF, usually it has more to do with teacher employment, but I digress), then you would expect to see teachers rewarded. This one is all backwards.

It's a rip off because there is no need in a school district to have a bureaucrat earning that kind of money. All the real work gets done at the individual school building which requires excellent teachers and a modicum of management from a principal. Beyond that level almost all bureaucracy becomes a necessary evil which provides no 'added value' to the school building and typically detracts from the learning that should be happening in the school building.
