The Yankees is dead! The Yankees is dead!
I know it's petty of me, but I had to smile when I woke up at 3am (thanks, fussing baby!) and thought to check my phone for the Yanks/Tigers final score. With apologies to the Yankees fans here, I'm a happy man today. The Evil Empire is out of the race!

I've been a Yankees fan for about 45 years now. Last night's game was SO frustrating. So many opportunities lost. Oh, well. They did better this year than I thought they would. At the moment, the Tigers are the better team.
I say it will be the Rangers over the Phillies in the World Series. |

The Yankees championship wins help build a fund to send my nieces to college. I would rather they win and the girls go to a better college. Also, a lot of their guys are anything but evil.

Clearly. Sports are entertaining -- not to be taken too seriously. I didn't mean that literally...

In North Texas during the fifties and sixties there was no major league baseball. In the days of Mantle and Maris I was a SERIOUS Yankee fan. Once I was grown and started seeing that they were dominant largely because they had the biggest market and could afford more expensive players, I lost my zeal for them.
It was good to see them go down. If you think it's territorial with me, I enjoy seeing the local Dallas Cowboys go down for a similar reason.

That's true. They get good people. Even A Rod, who people love to hate, works hard and plays the game the way it should be played.
The same is true of the Red Sox. They also get people with their heads screwed on straight (Manny Ramirez being an exception to that rule). |

One would be hard-pressed to find a professional sports team whose staff is 100% "good." And with free agency, your team's beloved starter would be one of the "bad guys" next season -- you just never know. That's why I find it hard to tale the us vs. them thing too seriously. I never understood how fans could get into fistfights over sports.
Yes, there are good Yankees. They're not inherently "evil." I was kidding. I think Larry got what I meant -- they've got a huge, very vocal fan base, and they spent wads and wads of cash year after year. It's nice to see the smaller market, smaller payroll teams knock them off. And yes, I am aware that the Cubs have been spending money like no one's business lately too. That's why I have been so happy to see them starting some rookies.

A Yankee fan from way back. Since growing up with my Dad listening to Mickey Mantle on the radio while he painted awnings behind his shop.
I hate to see them go down but you gotta give it to the Tigers. I also bemoan the move away from the House that Ruth Built (I'm a traditionalist) and I have all the respect in the world for the loyalty that keeps Fenway and Wrigley not only original but with the original names. I'm pulling for a Rangers-Cards Series.

Where did those 50 years go?? Roger Maris 1961 - 61st Home Run as Called by Red Barber, WPIX-TV, 10/1/1961 - YouTube My dad dragged me out of HS to go to the opening game of the '61 Series. Whitey Ford tossed a two hit shutout as the Yankees beat the Reds. After the game 1 shutout Whitey Ford ran his scoreless innings streak in the WS to 35 innings in game 4, breaking the record of Babe Ruth in the process. Trivia: The Yankees had 3 catchers hit 20 home runs in 1961. Berra, Ellie Howard and Johnny Blanchard. The entire team hit 240. |

But I told you in another thread that the Cardinals were a team Philly didn't want to see in the playoffs. They should have rolled over last week in Atlanta. Even with Halliday going tonight, I's worried ! Top to bottom, the Cards hit the bejeezus out of the ball! Man, I hope Pujols and Fielder say Sayonara to the Nat'l League. |

Ditto that. Can you imagine owning the old Yankee Stadium and then deciding to tear it down? I can't. The new stadium is an abomination, IMHO.

Every year, we go through this same painful consideration over Wrigley. Oddly enough, it's generally Sox fans who want to see the Northsiders move. I don't make it to Wrigley often, but it sure is quite an experience!
