Advice needed on paying for a car

I need some advice. I am thinking of buying a Honda Civic for my daughter and have found a nice one at the right price. It is from a private owner and there is a lien on the car. Should I make the check out to the owner AND Honda Motor Credit, Honda Motor Credit alone or just the owner. I have never bought a car this way before. Thanks for any insight.

I bought my truck that way, I had the owner to sign the title and went to the bank with the owner and paid off the truck and had the bank to sign off on the lien.

The seller cannot convey title to the vehicle without the release of lien by HMC on the transfer of title. I would contact HMC and find out what their SOP is. They do this on a daily basis and can guide you on how they like it done.

Are you paying more, less or exactly what is owed to HMC? You should make a check to HMC for exactly what HMC is owed unless the seller is making up the difference. If the seller is making up the difference, present the checks at the same time and get some assurance that your payment will be refunded if the seller's check doesn't clear. Anything over what is owed should be paid to the seller.

Does the state in which the car is registered have paper titles? Paperless titles are increasingly common with finance companies.

Call your MVD and ask what the procedure is. They won't convey title without a lien release from Honda.

Thanks for all your help. The owner is going to call Honda tomorrow and see how they do it. We are in SC and Honda is in Pittsburgh.
