Does anyone stand at their computer?
I spent the weekend with a friend and he stands at his computer. I really kinda liked it. the desk was at the perfect height to just walk up and use the computer. I sit all day at a computer and when I use the computer at home I'm in the same position. I don't think my boss would let me stand at the computer, but I could build a desk that would put my computer up higher so i could stand at home. my friend had a chair like for a drafting table where you sit higher, if he wanted to sit.

I do watch movies on the computer at home, not sure how relaxing it would be to watch them while standing or on a tall chair. but I could get a better screen maybe and then watch them from the futon that is behind me. still kicking this idea around. but I feel the need to shake up my living space. maybe this is the right move. any ideas?

I work in IT, and I can tell you it is becoming more and more common. Business is paying attention because of back and neck and shoulder issues; the bigger the company, the more accommodating they are likely to be of such requests.

Also starting to gain traction (no pun intended) is the use of a standing desk with a treadmill, so employees can walk periodically while working. It increases their fitness and productivity and reduces time missed from work.

Auto Parts counter employees have been doing it for years.

I kept my drafting table at standing height while in school for years, and with a chair the right height you can stand, or sit with your feet on the bar of the table comfortably for literally days. Friends thought I was a bit nuts.

Every wonder why bars have foot rails? Its so you can stay comfortable sitting or standing. Being able to shift posture makes the customer able to bethere longer and more $$ for the bar owner.

I once considered a desk that was built like a motorized drafting table, so that you could either work sitting or standing.

Yep I work the parts counter at an electric supply. I do have a stool though if I want to sit.

Got me a standing desk at work. Spring loaded, I keep it up all day most days, drop it to sit for an hour or so some days. Or to put my feet up on when an office nap is needed.

Standing desk is supposed to be an advantage for losing weight.

Is he German? In Germany, in fast food places, or in the lunchroom in the office buildings, the tables are for standing to eat. It seems strange, but it's actually pretty easy to get used to.

I think the size of the surface required to effectiviely perform your work required a "standing" posture. I used have a drafting job during the summers I attended college, and I couldn't imagine doing the same job sitting the way I do at my IT job.

Our cubicicle walls are chest-high, so if enough folks started working while standing up, the company would have to invest in taller partitions...

Like Julio, I'm plenty old enough to have spent time on "a board." In fact I'm a good bit older than Julio.

I took several years of drafting in High School. I don't know how many hours in college (Engineering Graphics) and a number of my early career years were spent at a drafting board. I always had a tall stool, but rarely sat on it.

The first company supplied computer I ever had AutoCad on, went on top of my drafting board and I stood to use it about as much as I stood to draw. Shortly after that, the drafting board was moved out and a desk like table took its place with the computer. I remember how weird it was to be "drawing" while sitting down.

Today, there is a whole generation of Engineers in the middle to late stages of their career who probably never have drawn a single line on Velum. If that doesn't make me feel old, nothing will.

I'm a drafter by title, but my mom is a real drafter. My mom owned her own engineering business when i was a kid. shes a civil engineer. she was a one man shop. she majored in engineering, with a minor in art. her plans were all hand drawn and truly were art. when i was a kid i remember helping her run the blue print machine. me on the other hand, I review plans in PDF and draw in auto cad, so yeah, I don't get a cool table in my cube, just a folding table that barely holds a full size set of plans. I with we had a 24x36 scanner.
