Opinions wanted on caliper colors.

I am getting ready to replace my rotors and pads on all four corners on the 190E. I have seen the pictures of Justin's E55 with the lime green calipers and it got me thinking.

I'm going to have everything off anyway (planning on putting new brake lines as well) so why not paint the calipers. The lime green is an option (car colors are similar) other colors I have been thinking about are a red (pretty common), yellow (also common), a navy blue or a little darker (different but not in your face), gun ship gray (clean but kind of bland) or black (same as gray).

Any other suggestions? I'm not very good at picturing something in my mind so looking for opinions.

Thanks

I thought of painting the caliper and hub of the rotor,, but what paint should I use ? I use high heat on the pipes on my motorbike but it's always flat black,,,good to 1300 F but good for only 1 year . ps I would go high gloss black for contrast to rim and shinny rotor :},,

I have that ability. A dark gray would look nice and respectable. Just my 2 cents.

as to which paint type, use paint DESIGNED for the calipers and brake parts.

if your car is green, use green. if your car is red use red.
black looks real nice.
I've always painted the auto parts I put on cars I work on. water pumps, calipers etc.
if it's not aluminum, I paint it.
I sometimes clear coat the aluminum parts I install...

Red calipers on a monochrome (anywhere black, grey, silver, or white) car look awesome.

If you are looking for a gloss finish that will be easy to clean then look into having them powder coated. There are a lot of different colors to chose from.

You would have to have them rebuild afterwards, though, as I doubt the rubber sleeves could take the oven treatment they would get during the process.

It would look nice, though.

A friend of mind has an oven and all the power coating equipment. I had thought about that but not sure if I want to rebuild the calipers. How does one go about doing that as far as getting the cylinder out of the caliper? That is pretty much the only thing that needs to be removed right? Do you use air pressure?

I like the red but yet don't. It is so common and I was hoping for a slightly different look. The lime green on Justin's E55 is definitely different. I am also becoming some what attached the the idea of a dark blue caliper as well.

I painted my calipers red on my 84 500 sec and found younger men in high performance vehicles with loud mufflers wanting to race me from time to time. It was sort of surreal.

It looked pretty good though.

That S550 above is a guy local to me... Hes got something like 12 piston front brakes!

As for caliper colors, I went with a color that accents the paint. My car is Tektite Grey - which has quite a bit of green pearl in the paint when the sun hits it. I took it one step further, and installed green foglight bulbs that accent the color at night! It is definitely a head turner - as its quite different!

What is the exact color of your 16 valve? IIRC - It was 199 Blue/Black, but might have been 040 black... I saw it at like 9pm when I met you in Texas!

I say match the body color of the car or go with grey/black.

The color of the 16v is 199 blue/black which is part of the reason I was thinking of going with a dark blue.

If you're having trouble visualizing, check online for the high-temp colors available...it's a small pallet. Pick a couple you think are possibles given your general preferences.

Then go to a crafts store and look at their poster paints; they are cheap and water-soluble. Matches won't be exact, but close enough. Then pull the wheel and paint the caliper with the poster paint. Don't bother cleaning them first, just a quick wash and dry. Nor do you have to do a good job, just brush it on. No big deal if you are sloppy, either.

Put the wheel back on and see what you think. Take a couple of pics and then pull the wheel, wash it off and go to the next color.

That should get you close enough, then you will know what looks best to your eyes and taste...and that's what matters the most.

Good luck.
