Rats trained to find landmines in Mozambique

Bart Weetjens « Skoll Foundation

Pretty wild, not sure if it's an old story, but they trained local African rats to smell out gunpowder in exchange for a food reward. I've been hearing about the Skoll foundation on local NPR, they describe themselves as a foundation promoting social entrepreneurism. On first hearing about them, I thought maybe the tobacco company was trying to greenwash their image but no, different spelling.

The video goes on to explain how the rats can be trained to sniff out TB and other diseases much faster than human testing.

Mice are trained to take leaders down tubes so electrical wires can be pulled into them...

They already have 2 legged rats that go after X-boxes for sale at WalMart on Black Fridays in California.

Apparently.

Maybe all of them could be sent to Mozambique. Both places could gain from this.

Not only that, these rats have a deluxe diet. That's why they work so hard.

Depending on what it cost to train them the solution would be to train bigger rats!

After enough dead rats were laying around untrained rats could be sent out to eat them. If they found another mine while doing so it would just be like money in the bank.

I tell you.... Sometimes I amaze myself with these uncanny solutions!

I wonder if they dig them up or they detonate them somehow?

Very elegant solution to the very very serious land mine problem!

In Africa I suspect the trick is to get the rats there before the children find the land mines the unfortunate way.
