LINUX Mint 11 katya. Help needed.
 

I have had no help from my IT guy and he's disappeared. I am so frustrated with this LINUX it's not funny.:mad: Cannot open downloads . When I check on sites for help it just so much gobbledygook and tech jargon.

Does anyone have a simple solution to open a download without hours writing to system like...

deb http://<mirror>.dl.sourceforge.net/project/jedit /deb jEdit - Browse Files at SourceForge.net /

Then, just run apt-get update, followed by apt-get install jedit.

WTF !...why can't this load automaticly or at least say what the hell you need to open it.

Furinsence....here's what I get trying to open a R129 2000yr > download from Mercedes.

That's not a .zip file, that's an .exe file. (i.e. a self-extracting .zip file that doesn't need unzip to extract). Won't work by default in ChromeOS or MacOS either.

Either:
(a) get someone to send you the files in a non-retarded format (regular .zip) or...
(b) I think you can use the built-in unzip utility to extract the file if you run it in Terminal and point it to the file's actual path

Open up a terminal window.
Type "chdir /home/dkv/Downloads <enter>" to change to the file's location.
Type "unzip mw9791enu.exe <enter>".

No quote marks on either entry!

If you are at all familiar with Windows then it would be called a DOS window or something crap like that...

The terminal is a command line interface.

I've not hear of mint before but it looks like you've got GNOME - so go to the left hand corner of the screen where you can find your programs and type in "terminal" in the search box.

cd /home/dkv/Downloads

Then hit the <enter> key. Sorry, brain fart there -- some variants of Linux have chdir, others cd, some accept both!

Are you trying to unzip a windows .exe file?

If so why? What's the point? It is a Windows file it won't work on Linux. It is like asking someone who only speaks French to suddenly speak Martian...

A lot of zipped files have executable code to unzip them tacked on, so the extension is .exe and they can be run directly in Windows to unzip them. However, Linux unzip can also read the zipped part (in theory) and extract them.

Oh right - didn't know that. I've always just booted up my VM and gone on from there.

You forgot the "cd" part.

After some days trying to get this system to function, allow features to load and not say Sorry this is not a file or unable to open due to some obscure reason that even if you correct it still will not load.

You see ? This is what I mean about this damn operating system. It is difficult to navigate, not intuitive by any means and quiet honestly ...even though a free distro... it's a pain in the rear.

I'm dumping this crappy system and moving back to a system that allows 'drag and drop' and will know what to do with an exe.

Tonight I watched a Bogart movie on You Tube after firing up my XP Pro system....guess what, didn't crash, didn't get jerky, clear picture, no drop outs and played over an hour movie faultlessly....unlike the Linux Mint Katya 11.

So don't write me and tell me I'm an idiot for not using Linux.:furious3::computer:..some of us can and some of us don't want to and flaming me for my choice will not make everyone say how wonderful the folk are who use Linux...in fact, it will reinforce the opinion of many who hold Linux in derision.

I like to get in, turn the key and drive...not build the bloody vehicle every time I open the garage door. :vbac47679

By the by, what part of Dutch land you at? Used to drive truck over there a while ago for Bradys and Son and then Tempo Freight out from Felixstowe or Hull to The Hook.

Moving furniture ( flat packets)s from Eindhoven and groupage to Germany and all points south down to Sicily.

I'm not a Linux expert but I read that the Ubuntu and SUSE versions are good.

Been there and done that too :o. Linux is nice for a bit (its free at least) but in some cases trying to get anything to run is a massive pain. I threw a couple distros on my PC for a bit in between XP (which had a lot of issues with my build) and 7. I also ran Ubuntu full time on a laptop a little while ago and it was great for basic stuff. My PC where I use fairly advanced audio software (and games) didn't make sense to use Linux, they typically wouldn't run through Wine either. That's when I upgraded to 7 and haven't looked back. The only frustrating thing I've run into is file permission issues with 7, which take some workarounds to resolve.

MacOS running on non-Apple hardware. Best of all worlds: you get a slick GUI, a solid UNIX core, and you don't give a dime to Apple (the pioneer of computing as a jail, in the words of Richard Stallman -- the man may be an ass, but he spoke the truth).

You can polish a turd and chrome it if you like, it's still a turd. ! :toilet:

Android is essentially Linux, and it rocks compared to what Crapple and MS are using in their smartphones.

I suppose, they've all got their own problems. 7 is a decent OS for my purposes

The OS really has to be dictated by the software you must use. I'm running Ubuntu at home and loving it, but all the home computer is used for is web, file storage, and watching TV and movies. Ubuntu is really great for all of this.

At work we use Autocad, and program PLCs, and XP is still doing this the best. we have a few Windows 7 Computers... but all of them have VMware XP systems installed to program the PLCs.
