Good or Bad? obligatory DUI detection kit in the car

http://lci.tf1.fr/france/societe/sarkoz … 50757.html

In France, the president wants to require a DUI detection kit be carried in every car and be used, in case of vehicle stoppage by the cops.

The logic is that this way, you can't say you didn't know.

And if you're driving, the state gets a hefty fee.

A small excerpt from the article, translated by Google...

While nightclubs must be equipped "for the detection of alcohol levels" from 1 December, another place will soon be fitted alongside the mandatory yellow vests and warning triangles. Nicolas Sarkozy announced Wednesday that the presence of a breathalyzer in every car would be mandatory from next spring. The head of state presided over the presentation of the Elysée "gold scarves of road safety", which reward municipalities and departments for their efforts in the fight against road accidents. The presence of a breathalyzer in cars will allow individuals to assess whether they are able to drive after drinking, he said.

I suppose if you are in the habit of driving after drinking, the ability to check your BAC before you get started could come in handy. However, I have a better idea: Don't drive after drinking.

Silly surrender monkeys.

Seems like a waste of money for those who don't drive after drinking at all, but a good idea otherwise, as long as the devices can be accurate.

I don't think that those will be hooked up to the ignition -- they'll just be required to be present in the first-aid kit. Same as the kit itself, the warning triangle, and the reflective vest.

My only question is, how accurate will they be after lying unused for a few years without calibration?

Ignition interlocks have been an option for DUI convictions for some time down here.
Repeat offenders can have one fitted to their car (~$1,000) & keep their license if the judge agrees.
it has worked well down here.

I'm aware -- but this doesn't sound like what they'll be doing in France.

Beings that DUI has become such a huge cash-cow...makes one wonder how long it will be before someone invents a device that detects pot smoke.
