From my experience working on friends Fiats when living in Germany I was ready to absolutely BLAST the Fiat's. After watching the video, where can I buy one?

I drove the 500 last summer. Interesting car, but not $20k interesting. Abarth is worth a look, though reliability is ????.

The Abarth should be here in a few months.

One of my BiLs rented a 500 for an approx 1000 mile round trip. Said he like it and its MPG quite a lot. I'd like to try a similar test.

On the video, how could such a country be in dire straits? Way cool . . .

If today's Fiats were even ten times as reliable and durable as they were when I worked on them for friends, they would still be the worst car on the planet.

In the late sixties, early seventies a number of my friends bought new 850's and 1250's with 10,000 Kilometer Warranties. Most of them didn't make it to the end of the warranty before coming apart at the seems.

The popular 1250 sedan came out later as the Yugo when Fiat sold the tooling to a company in Yugoslavia. BAD car!

Same here...but my issue wasn't reliability (although obtaining parts was akin to trying to source nukes in Russia).

The sheetmetal had NO protection from inclement weather! My dad bought a new one in the dead of an Illinois winter, and by the summer, it developed rust cavities the size of softballs!

In the same year, the next-door neighbor bought an 850. It was yellow, and he cleverly hid the ever-multiplying rust spots with black electrical tape in an attempt to mimic "rally stripes"!

Eventually, it began to look like a bumblebee!

We had a 124 convert when I was a kid. Learned to drive on it and a Saab.

The Fiat was reliable, though tough to source parts and they were expensive. It was a summer only car and scary to drive in the rain.

I drove a fiat in europe in 2007 for about 2000 km. other than the complete lack of arm rests, I'd buy one...
also, see the Top Gear episode where they tested one to see if it fit "everyday people's lives"...

The 124 was a little better than the 850. (I don't think the 124 was called a 124 in Europe IIRC) I don't remember any 124's blowing an engine BEFORE warranty's end. The GI's couldn't keep their hands off them. At a time when a new VW Beetle cost about $1400, you could buy an 850 Spyder for right at $1000. It was cheaper, sportier and more fun to drive, except for those many times that you were outside pushing it.

So as long as the rear glass heater works, your hands are warm when pushing it

Probably because you harbor a not-so-secret desire for JLo?

A lady that worked with my mom had an 850 and I worked on it a couple of times. Good thing about the old Fiats, they were already so quirky and unreliable you couldn't make them worse, which raised the comfort factor when working on it.
