Mine on the W124C broke a few years ago. Took it to an indy and he swapped it out no time at all. He had a boatload of them. The color or the speedo needle is slightly different than the others though.
IIRC, there was an old thread at "mercedesshop" on this subject.

Isn't there a poster here that specializes in odo needle repainting?

I've ordered from them twice.
No problems, quick deliveries and and gears look to be made of high quality plastic.

One problem I have found with old VDO speedos is the drive magnet freezing up.

When you take a speedo out remove the back cover. You will then be looking at a metal housing where the speedo cable goes into that screws on the the speedo. It will be held in by two small screws. You can remove these and the magnet drive will lift off.

Test the magnet, which is a circular pieces of metal at the end of the drive shaft, to see if it turns freely. If not they are almost impossible to unfreeze.

This is a great way to test a speedo in wrecking yard before you buy it. You can also look at the gears and see what they look like, and you can turn the gears and see if everything rotates as it should. If you turn the magnet drive drum on the speedo then remember that it turns counterclockwise.

The magnet drive is easy to replace as all of the adjusting is done inside the metal holder and you will not mess any of this up. Just replace it and be sure the magnet drive fits inside of the speedo drive drum and it should screw right down when you replace the two screws that hold it on there.

Don't touch the face of the speedo! Oil from your fingers will be impossible to remove.
