Welfare vs Producer states

America's fiscal union: The red and the black | The Economist

It's interesting that many of the states that are doing poorly budget-wise now actually send a lot more money to DC than they ever get back. Wonder if their budgets would be a lot more balanced if they weren't parasitized by DC, year after year.

This especially goes for California, which is something like the 8th largest economy in the world, grows a lot of their own food, has quite a few ports, and has pretty much ideal climate. Maybe the place should secede!

They can't. The federal government owns more than half the state's land. Good thing that feudalism thing was replaced with this democracy business.

I'm in CA and honestly, the Spanish language is the last thing on my mind. Especially regarding government issues. It's just a clever meme to keep people focused on mindlessness instead of something that matters. Football, gay marriage, damned metsicans!!!

There are ways to work around that -- when Kazakhstan seceded from the USSR, the Russians were given a long-term lease on Baikonur Cosmodrome, among other facilities.

The Spanish were there before the Anglos!

FYI- the US has no official language. And why would speaking more than one language destroy a society, rather than enriching it? Also, people said the same things about the Italians, Poles, and Germans as they now do about the Mexicans. Somehow, this country survived.

For some reason, I've agreed with you on many occasions today...

It's history that every group of immigrants wants to lock the doors, once they're in.

1. the Latino birthrate is HUGE compared to the other groups you mentioned.

2. And it largely refuses to learn or speak English. Cannot and does not want to ASSIMILATE.

Last year I went on a tour of the California Highway Patrol Academy in West Sacramento that was arranged by a past President of the MBCA.

The CHP cadet training is VERY rigorous, but includes TWO hours a day of Spanish class!

It was explained to us "that this is necessary because so many motorists cannot or do not want to Speach ENGLISH!! And need to be questioned for traffic stops and when caught in drunk driving situations!"

In one case, some time ago, that I will never forget, a station wagon in San Diego full of Mexican Illegal aliens sped up the off ramp and had a HUGE head on collision with an oncoming car in the freeway resulting in a horrenedous fireball that incinerated the occupants of the car they hit.

The wagon was full of Illegal Mexicans, none of whom (when questioned by Police) could read or understand the road sign at the bottom of the off ram:

GO BACK

YOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY

^^^

Time to standardize road signs, worldwide, then -- the Mexican "do not enter" sign (crossed out arrow) looks nothing like the US or Euro "do not enter" signs (white bar on a red circle, or colors the other way around).

Anyway, the sign was probably "DO NOT ENTER" or "WRONG WAY" written out, rather than the pictogram. Stupid, since it could confuse even legal tourists, and SD has a lot of those!

As far as assimilation, they said the same things of the Poles, Jews, Irish, Italians, and Germans -- yet a half century or more later, things worked out just fine.

They will learn english as according to their need to succeed and their ability to learn it. No big deal.

I am sure many of my ancestors spoke german only when they arrived.

It is a VERY "BIG DEAL" because genration after generation of Mexican illegals, stream in on a day basis with NO education or skills, from the bottom strata of Mexican society and are trapped in low paying or dead end jobs, and still refuse to learn english, because in many areas of California both in rural and urban areas, they cluster in large groups and there are so many, and basic services that support them are so widespread that they can stay there and never need to speak a word of English in their life. If you don't believe it, then go to downtown LA in the areas surrounding USC and 7th and Sping; or to one of the LA's San Fernando valley cities like Van Nuys, and you would think you were in Mexico City DF. Or San Francisco's Mission District.

And their later generations, of children are the same. Even those of them that go to school at all.

Furthermore, as "anchor babies" the children of illegals are automatically US citizens.

And the uneducated of these do NOT follow any reasonably moderate family planning. Whether through ignorance, religion or a cultural background promoting as many babies as possible; the result is the same.

And you think that immigrants from any other ethnic group were the creme of their society (for the most part, excluding political refugees)? What you're saying could have been lifted from a nativist description of NY state ca. 1925.

I think it's a very big deal. Assimilation is largely defined by adopting, learning and speaking the offical language of the country. English IS the official language of the United States. The Germans I know here in the States speak English, just as myself.

Yeah, but many of the immigrants that came between say 1880 and 1925 didn't speak English (or necessarily their country's lingua franca, either -- local dialects were much more common in Europe then).
