Should the OP have the ability to moderate their own thread?

If allowed by the software, would you support allowing a thread originator to have administrative powers over their own thread, allowing the deletion of offensive posts and the ability to lock their own thread? Seems that granting such an ability would take some of the weight off of our moderators, who may actually have lives outside of this forum.

Your thoughts?

Solution looking for a problem?

I have often wondered about folks that start a thread who claim some sort of ownership benefits, railing against those who either take it in another direction or what some call highjacking. Frankly, you start a thread, say your peace and then off it goes.

I don't know - some threads seem to runaway in relatively short periods of time. It's unrealistic to have a 24-hour moderating team...

Because I feel that threads that go off on tangents are part of what make Internet forums interesting. Then again, moderation by the OP is better than heavy-handed moderation by the forum owners.

I've been there, done that. Proved to be disastrous and cause more problems than ever. Threads would brach out into others so those with different views could get a voice out and subsequently control their own thread. In the end it required more moderation than ever! The idea of moderation is that it comes from a neutral person or persons. A person starting their own thread is rarely neutral.

I thought being able to lock down a thread one started was a useful feature which has not survived the Pelican takeover/merger.

If points raised deserve additional airing people were welcome to start their own threads.

eharmony.advice not ONLY has a army of PAID moderators, but an even larger one additionally of unpaid volunteer forum moderators that moderate literally every single post 24/7 and delete posts without any notice or explanation all the time and it is a VERY active place.

Addtionally it has a secret and closely guarded automatic filter that screens out a huge list of "forbidden words" and if a post contains one it is automatically moderated and instantly deleted without notice.

Yet it also lifts posts that forum members make in their entirety without notice and reposts it without permission, on their facebook page whenever they want, to aggrandize their profit making efforts.

There used to be a lawyer here on MercedesShop that some of you may remember, ( "BENZ-LGB" ) who was also a prosecutor in So Cal who thought "the answer to free speech problems is MORE free speech".

He was VERY adament about this POV that he held.

Absolutely.

You never know when one of the trolls is going to take your thread in the exact opposite direction from what you expressed in your thread title.

Some of these trolls cannot read.

It's a sad situation.

Sounds strangely familiar...

Your thoughts?

Oh yeah! Now, that'll work!!!!

Had this brilliant scheme been in place a month or two ago, you wouldn't have had the pleasure of watching me get four infractions in the same day. You wouldn't want to deny yourself that kind of joy would you?

Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.

See, you're helping me make the point. Regardless of the fact that I don't respect your positions on virtually any topic, I don't see the need for someone to receive four infractions for multiple posts in one day. Everyone has a brain fart once in awhile. Think of the ability of an OP to edit some of your more disgraceful utterances before a real moderator raps you on the knuckles as the ability to give you a "mulligan", allowing you to come back another day and spew more of your philosophies to your rapt audience.

You still fail to see that your scheme would have denied you the entertainment of watching me be nailed.

In case you haven't noticed, I don't respect your positions either.
