Well there you go !!
Your police cars are being built in Australia .
& now the pride of the GM R&D is being given to China !!!
Interestingly the first Volts are just arriving in Australia.
They would have been better giving Saab to China & keeping the Volt.
Give it a few more years & GM will be a Chinese company !!

It's being given to them one piece at a time...

The US Government still owns 26% of the company.

It was not just GM patents, it was former Swedish patents. The Swedish patents, like Sweden itself, are registered under European Cmmunity Patent infrastructure and the Berne Convention of Intellectual Property, and the Chinese have no sway over either.

What are Chinese gonna do? Sell their Swedish bonds?

Oh but wait! Sweden doesn't have a deficit! Hmm, maybe that's why their country can do what it feels is in the best interest of its citizens!

Wow, what a radical concept!

China never should have been granted MFN status. They don't adhere to copyright laws, and are most willing to copy everything.

I saw a volt parked on the street yesterday. It looked exciting from a distance. Up close it looked bloated and had cheap touches like the black painted area under the windows. Prolly looks good in photos. The nose is interesting. Looks like it has a radiator at first glance but all the grill slots are blind (not openings just impressions in the plastic).

If I ever buy a new car again it will prolly be a VW jetta wagon diesel with stick. Til then I will probably stick with my trusty old 123 and 126 benzes.

Well this is not entirely correct. The GM have blocked the sale stating that they don't want China to get hold of their patents, not the SAAB.

"On 6 December 2011, GM announced that it would not continue its licenses to GM patents and technology to SAAB if the company had been sold to Pang Da and Zhejiang Youngman, stating that the new owner's use of the technology is not in the best interest of GM investors. Because of this, Saab started working on a new proposal which would not change the original ownership structure and would not include a Chinese partner as an owner of the company, but instead as a 50% owner of a new daughter company."

and more:
"
In a last bid for survival, Saab had been trying in recent months to arrange an infusion of cash from Chinese investors, including Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile.
But “G.M. said over the weekend ‘whatever happens, come hell or high water, we won’t support a deal with Youngman,”’ Mr. Muller said.
“I honestly don’t know” why G.M. refused to budge, he added. “They wouldn’t tell me.”
He said there remained a glimmer of hope for Saab, as there were still “parties out there that have expressed an interest.” But the automaker’s fate, he said, now rested in the hands of its receivers."

Fact: bail-out started under Bush, not Obama.

Quote:
WASHINGTON — The emergency bailout of General Motors and Chrysler announced by President Bush on Friday gives the companies a few months to get their businesses in order, but hands off to President-elect Barack Obama the difficult political task of ruling on their future.

The plan pumps $13.4 billion by mid-January into the companies from the fund that Congress authorized to rescue the financial industry. But the two companies have until March 31 to produce a plan for long-term profitability, including concessions from unions, creditors, suppliers and dealers.

In February, another $4 billion will be available for G.M. if the rest of the $700 billion bailout package has been released.

source: NYT December 2008
But then why should facts get in the way of politics.... just spin it hard enough, and history re-writes itself:

Quote:
In a June 8 article headlined, "Republicans hope General Motors is President Obama's Hurricane Katrina," the Politico reported that the "GOP sees President Barack Obama's decision to help the unpopular carmaker as an easy opportunity to paint him as a bailout-happy, deficit-drunk spendthrift."

source: Media Matters June 2009
