Ships are bloody expensive. To find a use for an old one on the chopping block is good. I'm picturing an old James Bond movie in which some old ship is used for a base.

This is a temporary thing, while a new one is made. Hopefully, they'll decide that retrofitting many of the older hulls is cheaper than new...

We had SEALS aboard a few times during my enlistment.

We'd go to Gitmo for training and one thing we were supposed to do was protect against sabotage by the SEALS. We got all bowed up every night.

One time I was in the keys back in the 1990's working on a mangrove project related to GCC. One of our long term monitoring sites was at a state park near or on Key Largo, I don't recall it's name. We accidentally stumbled on a parked large black cigarette boat hooked to a large black utility-type truck. Both had US Gov plates. Later we asked the park ranger about the set-up and he said the Navy was practicing running through the reefs at high speed. At night. Yeowza!

That would be John Pennekamp State Park. We keep our boat there when it's not Hurricane season.
