Bids over $17K and still not hitting the reserve.

He'd probably have done better with B-J, though he'd have had to transport it to them.

Either way, it's more than it cost new.

Overall nice ride. A co-worker circa 1996 had one of the same only in green. If the sale article has the reported mileage, one can expect it to leak every fluid it has within 10 miles of being brought back into active service. I'd value it at $5,000 tops.

Edit: At the time, I was running a 150k mile+ '76 Buick Century for which I'd paid the princely sum of $570. It lasted the summer, after which I had my dad sell it for me for $250. We got a call from the cops after the buyer apparently abandoned it after the motor blew not long after on the highway. I have personal experience of low mile vehicles being brought back into service. The best example was a 70 or so original mile HMMWV from 1985 being brought out in 2002. It looked great, but leaked every fluid it had, since all the rubber was done.

My family had a 76 Caprice in the late 70s. An absolutely awful car, to me it represented how the big 3 got into such trouble. At 3 years old it rattled like it was falling apart, which it more or less was. Several power windows did not work, several stereo speakers were non-functional, it leaked oil, etc. etc. By 1979, it felt very, very tired, with all of 35K miles on the clock.

Some of the paint jobs of that era were called "truck finish". It was also sometimes inadvertently used on cars.

I love how the hubcaps say "landau" as if you didn't notice the landau top (one of the most pointless and ugly "styles" ever to grace a car IMO).

x2 Why people value this kind of low mileage so highly is beyond me. All it means is more work to get it running, and yeah, thing will leak from every seal in about 15 minutes once you take a drive.

It's junk. It was junk then, it's junk now. Different strokes, I guess. On a good day sometimes I can see that kind of money for a musclecar of a few years earlier, but by the late 70s, Roger Smith was already at work.

That caught my eye too. Might just be factory quality orange peel finish.

That said, I still dig it. Although not at that money.

Notice the owners folio lists the owner as "Klares collection"
"Klare" would be Klare Sunderland. He's a big car dealer in Mechanicsburg PA.
Notice the badge on the Caprice says Sunderland motors. It was his dealership that bought the car from GM. Can't begin to guess how it ended up in CALI.
He & his family own an MB dealership:
I see a few of his cars down here in the summer.

Thanks, Lt. Columbo!

Pay dealer cost, ship it to Cali and register it, stick it in storage for 36 years, pull it out and eBay it as a mint, super-low mileage California car!

I wonder where his reserve is at? It would need to be considerably north of $17K for it to be worthwhile investment on his part if that is indeed what happened.
