Am i getting scammed? 1993 300CE W124.052

So i was interested in buying a car.. 93, 400e to be exact..
from craigslist.. the thing is
the car looks clean in and out in the pics and car is low mi, only 118,000
but the catch is the guy doesn't have a pink slip.. (and he bought it from a charity auction)[says he buys and sells cars for a living, but he drives the car hes trying to sell?]
he says he has bill of sale and a paper saying he doesn't need the pink to sell
so to make sure i said lets do the deal at the dmv..
to make sure all the paperwork is good and i'll get the pink slip in the mail..

so i ran a vin check on the car.. and the thing is it says last reported mileage 180K at 2010

so is this guy bull****ting or did something get messed up and or does he have a changed odochanged? (although it isn't reported and says the car is good)
is there any way to check if the odometer is changed?

i was going to buy it thursday

Why are you asking the question on here?

Is it not obvious to you what has transpired here? I'm sure you're not that stupid.

Do you wish for us to deny the obvious fraud so you can buy the vehicle despite it?

Sounds like a classic California curb stoner.

There's no excuse for not having a title present.

If he does it for a living, he should be a licensed, bonded dealer. If not, it a huge no-no in California. They recently stiffened up fines for curb stoning there.

Unless its a licensed dealer never buy a car without the title present and in the sellers name. Many dealerships finance their inventory and don't get the titles until they pay that particular vehicle off. This is common practice.

This really pisses me off. The DB's don't have the title, and yet, they demand you to pay the full amount of the sale price. You pay, and you DO NOT own the vehicle.

Who, in their right mind, would proceed with such a transaction? You have purchased NOTHING for all of your cash. You are relying on the DB to send you the title.

WTF is wrong with this picture?

I don't know many who don't finance their inventory this way. I'm the exception to the rule, but it does limit me as I don't have the purchasing power.

He should have gotten the title himself if its really that easy and put it in his own name.

I suspect someone shaves 100K from the odo. It should be 218K as it was 177K back in 09. It is easily done with old MBZ.

If you like the car, it smogs OK and the title can be transferred at the DMV legally then just factor in the car is 218K and take $1K off price.

For me it's very simple. No title=no sale.
