You have made a very convincing case for T walgumuth's advice to his daughter and original tip to the forum community being the correct advice. No one is arguing that diesel emissions are good for you, but its clear that the argument over CO is not in your favor.

Today I changed all five glows and discarded the old ones. I also found a leaky fuel return jump line and replaced that.

Tomorrow I will remove the tow bar brackets from the bumper mounts and reinstall the bumper.

Sounds like a pretty upstanding kid to respect his fathers wishes when pressured though, but not particularly inventive. There is ALWAYS a way to sorta respect the fathers wishes, AND please the girlfriend. :D

He could have push started it as well. Move it up to starting speed with the benz in neutral, backed away and stop when she was rolling, and let her pop the clutch, would have had no effect on his truck.

Tape some foam to her bumper, and he would have been none the worse for wear. If he was worried about the front bumper, he could push her up to speed in reverse with his rear bumper.

I have tried push starting before and it almost always ends with a damaged car.

I suspect he may have said his dad would not allow it because he did not want to do it. I attribute it to fear of the unknown and perhaps an inflated view of my thoughts about my old benz.

Well, if the vehicle gets damaged in any way, it will cause problems and be hard to explain. So, that is a consideration.

Depends on how much I trust you to do it right? I have had the wife practice hitting the brakes and slowly hit the gas pedal to spool up the turbo so I can check for leaks. Would I trust any "Tom, Dick or Harry" to do it? Not a chance.

Yeah that happens a lot. People always forget to make sure the push vehicle is away before popping the clutch. I've done it bunch of times without damage, but several times I did have a disaster because the driver of the dead vehicle was not clear on the plan.

For all the people who think diesel exhaust is harmless....

I have slept in a 240d with the engine at idle all night. I drove as long as conditions would allow. There was still maybe fifty miles to a motel.

I was not certain that in those conditions the engine at idle would create enough heat but there was no choice but to see. Suprising to me it did well in that regard. There was no more snow falling and basically everything was ice at the elevation I had to stop at. So no chance of trapped exhaust fumes if the snow accumulated especially with the wind that was blowing.

I was aware that some components of diesel exhaust can make you feel ill. This after driving hours after ripping part of the exhaust off on a road under construction with a jetta diesel. I should have kept the heater fan on to give the cabin more positive pressure. The unwell feeling only occurred or intensified after I stopped . Did not last that long. The north shore of lake superior is a long haul especially when the whole surface has been removed for processing first and later re application.
