Anastasia, 1956 film with Ingrid Bergman, Yul Brenner
Every now and then I see an old film and I'm shocked that I never saw it before. This one is not yet over, I'm not sure what twist is coming, but so far this has been one wild flick. Some deep stuff going back and forth.
(wikipedia): Anastasia is a 1956 American historical drama film directed by Anatole Litvak for 20th Century Fox. The film stars Ingrid Bergman, Yul Brynner, and Helen Hayes. Supporting players include Akim Tamiroff, Martita Hunt, and, in a small role, Natalie Schafer. The film tells the story of a young, confused woman in 1920s France (Ingrid Bergman), who is picked up and influenced by a group of Russian expatriates, led by Yul Brynner, into passing herself off as Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, the daughter of the murdered Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. However, the ultimate test for her is to convince the Dowager Empress, Maria Feodorovna (Helen Hayes), of her authenticity. Tell you what, if you think for a minute you might want to see it, DON'T read the full wikipedia entry. At least it keeps the spoiler hidden until the 4th or 5th paragraph. I told my nephew about the film "Harold and Maude" a few months back. He'd not seen or heard of it. He had his laptop nearby and within about 20 seconds said, "Oh wow, I dunno, part of the magic of a good play or movie is that you don't know what's going to happen. The web must be tamed (grasshopper).

Harold & Maud is a cult film. It may not have been intended as such, but it certainly culminated into being one. I wonder if nowadays generation would rhe drift of really catch the drift of it.
To make movies (pictures) is one thing, to shoot a video clip and upload it, is another.

Well, that's sorta my point. I didn't read anything about it past the first couple of sentences til it was over. I'm amazed that I heard of many films of that era, saw them on TV, etc. and this one I'd never even heard of. Bergman won an Oscar for this one. Brenner, who's acting is sometimes disparaged, did an excellent job, IMO.

Yul Brynner holds an iconic status of its own. "The King and I". A bit boring for my taste, but excellent. Try "The Magnificent 7" one of the finest star-studded classic Westerns ever.
Less known might be "Westworld" ...

This was her first American film after returning from Italy and the scandal. She had numerous moments of looking very good in this one. She was something special. More than the pretty face, she had those eyes, that depth of expression. Oh baby.
I just bought the DVD for $10 incl. shipping on Amazon. I missed the first hour (?!) and still dug it. I told one of my clients about it and he asked if Netflix has it. Sure enough: Netflix - Unlimited TV Shows & Movies Online It would almost be odd if it wasn't. Bergman won her second Oscar in the role. Another reason I'm surprised I hadn't seen it. I've seen Bergman in many films. Helen Hays was really good in this one as well. And Yul Brenner, who sometimes gets needling about weak acting really carried this role I thought.
