Question 1988 Mercedes 300 E 2 yrs car stalling

For almost 2 years now my Mercedes has been having a problem stalling. 1st my ABS light on then off intermittingly and now the ABS light on all the time. 1 1/2 yrs ago the car started this problem & finally figured out if I tapped this little black box under the hood on the front left then it would start, after stalling at a light or behind a car. Now it stalls when I am driving down the road with no warning, at 1st when it was going to stall it would seem like it was losing power, now it just dies. Anyone have an idea of what is happening? I really don't have the $$ to go to the dealer MB, so I have been driving on a prayer lately. Has this happened to anyone before?
Thanks (please help)

Do a search of the TECH HELP thread.......
for W124 stalling. Could be lots of things. My problem was a bad fuel pump regulator (1st time) about three years ago. Car started acting up in Sept. again, same problem and I had the ignition wires & rotor changed and no problems since.

Like I said, it could be many things.
But you can learn to shift into neutral, start the engine and drop back into drive very quickly.

1988 Mercedes 300E still stalling

Still searching for the answer but, thanks for the reply. Don't feel it is the fuel pump regulator, possiblly the fuel pump relay, but not sure. I have tried and tried to start the car in neutral and it doesn't start. I have to manually go under the hood and tap on the black box in the front under the hood. Glad you solved your issue though.
Still searching for the answer, but thanks so much!

It was my FP relay. not "regulator"
But Tech Help is the place to search.. Good Luck!

Could you just replace the black box that you have been tapping?

Could be your fuel injections electronic "brain" has failed and the car has been running on it's mechanical "liimp home" mode for the last couple of years. Happened to a friends fathers car some years ago. They went months wondering what the heck was wrong before it was diagnosed.

I will mention that this morning, it would kind of surprise me if it was that after being like this for over a year? How long could the car run on "mechanical limp-home"

His car ran like that for about six to nine months if I remember correctly. No clue how long it would have done so without being diagnosed but I see no reason why it could not have gone longer. Re an 83 Cadillac. Mine was a 72. A "real" Cadillac. I wouldn't touch an 83 with a barge pole.

Unhappy 1988 Mercedes 300E still stalling

Mercedes didn't stall for a day. Then yesterday I was driving and I was going 45 MPH and then the car stalled. I sat waited about 3 minutes it started back up again.
ONly thing different that he did was disassembled the alarm under the passengers floorboard because for some reason the lights were flashing. He thought that that fixed the problem, we let it run 2 different days for 45 min to 1 hour and it didn't stall then yesterday like I said going 45 MPH stalled. Getting real discouraged at this point.

Did you replace the OVP?

Mods: I suggest merging this thread with the related one in Tech Help.
