Buying Out of State Car on the Weekend

Hey everyone,

A quick question. My buddy and I might be buying a car in NY state. However due to our work schedules we can only go up on a weekend.

It seems we can get a interstate temp tag from the NYS DMV but they only appear to be open during the week...

Anyone have any ideas on what we could do?

I've only bought one car out of state and we drove home on the PO's plates (with his consent) and then simply mailed them back to him. I dont know if that was legal or not but we didnt have any issues or anything. It was quite a number of years ago too.

Bring it back on the PO's plates. You might consider reserving a uhaul dolly in case its not in as good a shape as you think.

Thats not a bad idea. I just lookd into it and the Jeep Wrangler doesnt the ability to tow a 560SEL. We'd have to get a U-Haul truck and full trailer. Cost some $590 or so.

The PO Plate thing will only work if the PO is willing.

In Indiana you can put your own plates on the car legally for 30 days without making it official at the license branch. A car does not legally need plates on it to be towed either.

Might want to verify what paperwork is coming with the car.

NYS is infamous for not requiring any title for older cars.
Can make it quite a pain to get it registered in your home state.

Or, just bring a set of your plates and drive it home on those.

Well I know it has a title. I ran an Autocheck on it and it was issued one when the current owner purchased it.

I think Ohio requires you to have a title, signed by both parties and notarized. That's what we had to do with my 190E.

you do not need anything on the car as long as you have in your possession the "signed"by both parties and dated title, and a bill of sale wouldn't hurt either.but carry along your insurance card from your highest insured vehicle as proof of insurance.most companies will ins a new to you car for 30 days without you actually registering it.or you could insure it by vin number and then you would have a card that matches the vehicle even though you technically don't yet own it.

Neither of those strategies work in CT.

If you are going to drive the car, you will need to have insurance. No insurance company is going to cover the vehicle without some sort of binder, and no cop will let you drive off in it (if they stop you) without proof of insurance.

Running with no plates will get you pulled over and towed. Using plates from another car will get you a misdemeanor misuse of plates charge.

Any vehicle with wheels touching the road surface (ie tow dolly or wrecker) must be registered. Tow companies must carry an in-tow plate for anything unregistered.

I would get the car insured, then get temp plates from your home state DMV.
Bit more of a nuisance, but totally solid from a legal standpoint as well as liability.

YMMV.

Many states won't give any temporary plate to a resident of the state. NY certainly won't. You'd have to properly register it.

It's always a problem to move a vehicle for the first time. Purchasing from a dealer eliminates it because they issue the temporary tag. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of the local DMV, and, you absolutely need the vehicle insured in your home state or you get nothing from the local DMV.

Add the car to your policy online, you can generally print a temporary insurance card. Put a plate from one of your current cars on the car and carry the signed title.

In a perfect world.

Best bet is to use the PO's tags. Until a new title is issued, or registration expires, the plates are good (IMHO)

Aside from that, you could get temp tags in NY, but that might be next to impossible if you're out of state and it's a weekend.

and finally last option, throw on a set of your plates, and hope for the best. If you get pulled, have the signed and notorized title in hand, along with your insurance card. In Ohio, the insurance company give you 30 days if you have a policy with them. They will back charge you to the day you purchased the car. If your not speeding or breaking any other law and you get a decent trooper he will let you continue on your journey. But if you're driving 90 mph all bets are off.

Additionally, since you're driving there, have your buddy drive behind you, and just keep with traffic, no 5 mph under, that draws the sniffer dogs.

And BY ALL MEANS, if you see a sign that says "Drug Checkpoint Ahead" and the sign is immediately before an exit, DO NOT TAKE THAT EXIT, no matter what,,, my bro drove up here this past week and saw that sign on 77, the checkpoint was for everyone that took the exit,,, he kept driving and approached the toll booths,,,

They have DEA checkpoints now? What a ****ing invasion of privacy. Don't take the exit, drive on, BUT hope that a truck loses its brakes, hitting the checkpoint at 80 mph. I'd only feel sorry for the truck driver, put it that way.

Hopefully we can do this, however Im looking to have backup plans in tact in the event that it doesn't. This is what I did in the case of my 190E. For the 420SEL it was only 3 hours away and we just used another one of the Mercedes plates and drove responsibly and carefully home.

I did see that NY had temp tags however there are no DMV's open on the weekend and I dont think us nor the seller could get the time off to make things happen during the week.

Right now, this is the best backup option I can see as no state dmv will issue a temp tag without title in hand and title wont be in hand until the weekend and everyone is closed.

Once you get the car to Ohio the first thing you will have to do is go to the BMV and have an inspection. This is not an inspection of the car, but a verification of the VIN. It is a stupid @#$^#$% procedure. It is as if Ohio does not believe other states can get the VIN number correctly on the title. Years ago you had this done by a car dealer and the first time that I had it done proved what s stupid thing this is. The man wrote the VIN number incorrectly on the paper work. I went to the title office and presented the inspection certificate and South Carolina title.....first thing I was told was that the inspection did not match the title. Ohio has THE dumbest ***** when it comes to vehicles.

LOL. Yes I had to do this with my 190E. It was stupid! On top of that I had to go to a completely separate part of town to get it done! Then go back and get the title work all done.
