"Here we've reached the base of the antenna. It's only another 60' to the top."
As if the fact that you're at that height already weren't enough, "tricky parts" just seem to make it that much worse! ![]()

Another job that I can only hope they are paid what's it worth.
$1000 an hour doesn't seem too much. At $10,000 and hour I might try it, if they would get me a life insurance policy.

I like the little blurb about OSHA approving of the "free-climbing" section of the tower. Yet our forklift is non-compliant because the overhead guard is an inch lower than standard.

Those pegs that he climbs for the last 60' are unsupported at the outside. A bit of corrosion at the mounting point by the tube and one of them snaps due to the high bending moment.................

I was OK ( sort of) with the climbing inside the tower. It was going outside that made me queasy, and then the climbing over and onto the "platform" did it for me.

My sphincter is so tight I won't be able to crap for a week. I could not do it. No way, no how.
I like the part at 6:40 or so. "This is the tricky part, getting on top". As if the rest was cake walk.

I have done some steel inspection--not much, but enough to appreciate the work. In fact doing it occasionally is worse than doing it everyday--it takes a while to get a feel for it.
Having said that, a coworker related a story. He was about 11 stories up on a steel framework for a nurses dormitory in Baltimore. With him, was a man who at about 70 years old, was considered the"dean" of steel inspectors in the area. My friend was following the older guy on an 8" beam and they were trying to have a conversation, but it was difficult so the old guy, without skipping a beat, did a 180 degree turn in the middle of the span, and then walks backwards so they can talk face-to-face. My friend said it almost made him fall just to watch the guy. Some people can do that!

In my B.A. years..{before arthritis} I once took a bet of 100 bucks that I couldn't climb a 120 foot radio tower. I made it up fine, no problem.
Coming down was another story, took me TWO HOURS cause I hadda look down, that killed it for me. Massive, frequent panic attacks, brown stains to match! I was also stone cold sober at the time........................

I just watched it again, this time with the wife and using the 50" television as a monitor. My wife will be throwing that particular pair of my underwear out in the garbage...
