Personhood for Apes

I was watching Harry's Law on TV and the episode was dealing with a gorilla who escaped from a zoo and the person who took in the gorilla wanted to adopt the Gorilla. In order to adopt a gorilla it would have to be granted person hood.

The show said that there were countries that had granted rights to great apes. I looked it up and low and behold there are some who have done so. New Zealand has gone the farthest. They have granted basic rights to 5 apes which means they cannot be used for research, teaching or testing.

I like the idea. Apes are a few genes away from us. Our genetic tree did not split that long ago. They have very advanced intelligence. I do have issues with animals like that being held captive for our entertainment.

Poor hood

They're definitely different than ants or spiders and an adult ape seems closer to a person than a human fetus or infant. But why only 5? Are they the aristocrats of apes? They probably more of a moral sense than a corporation.

With that said then, maybe we need equal protection for those who want to have sex with apes? Sounds like a sure 14th amendment challenge.

If Diamond is correct, we're all having sex with great apes.

If we split from apes, why are there still apes?

For the same reason there are wolves and dogs.

I think you meant to write, "Since we split from apes. . ."

In your thinking, if we domesticated apes for a few hundred years, they'd be productive members of society with voting rights...

With our luck, they'd all vote for democrats...

I believe they would be a gorilla that ripped your face off. They are a gorilla, not a human. That does not mean that we have the right to conduct medical experiments, show them off like a pet and demean them. These are intelligent, self aware animals. They are not domesticated animals.

What of Darwinian theory?

Darwin's theory is that living things evolve and not that man came from monkeys.

Living things do evolve. Humans are much more robust creatures than we were only 250 years ago.

I don't know if we have gotten any smarter, but we surely have gotten bigger and stronger. We also live much longer.

Darwin is really overrated as a subject to get torn up about.
