Automobile gas tank cleaning, been sitting since 96

I'm bringing a 1984 BMW 318i back to life after sitting behind a barn since 1996. Got everything sorted for the most part but I'm going to need to drop the gas tank and clean it. Anyone have any good ideas on the best way to do it?

Pressure washer, maybe carwash. If it is rusty you can chem treat it or use electrolysis. Rust belt outlets sell some cheap tanks but probably not that one.

X2 on pressure wash.
Baffles can be a pain though.
Have used steam on large tanks prior to welding.
If you get the tank hot, it dries out properly.

When I was in Madison, you could take your radiators (assuming they were mental and not plastic ends) and gas tanks to a shop and they would boil them clean and pressure test them. Do you have such a facility?

It is metal. I don't think it would be in such a mess if it were plastic. I'm going to get it out of the car today.

If you think about it later on in this project. Come back and post how it went in general. I have seen several deals on BMWs lately that caught my attention. Wondering about the ups and downs of playing with an older one?

This would be a fun, neat little car to own and I could see myself owning a four door like it.

Took two hours to drop the tank. The driveshaft does have to come out for this operation. What I'm getting in to is "while I'm in thereitis". Now it looks like the carrier bearing on the driveshaft is going to need to be replaced. Easy, straight forward car to repair.

It is only showing ~127k miles but the speedo/odo does not work.

gas tanks can be cleaned very easily with a torch...

depending on it's condition, I would be real tempted to replace

I realize you cars gas tank is a bit larger than what this was intended for, but.......

I know a few who've had good results with this product.
