Buying '96 S600 - advice

What goes wrong with these cars as a W140 chassis, I am not interested to hear the woes of the V12 motor, I am only interested in hearing about evaporator issues, accessories, suspension, etc etc electrical and the like.

The particular specimen that I am purchasing has 37600 miles and is being purchased from the original owner. For those of you that are wondering the 300D will of course remain in the stable, after all it's been in the family since it was new.

Best regards,
Chris

BTW the car I am purchasing is a 4 door W140, not the coupe

Nobody knows anything about this car?

Who in here owns an S600 or CL600 that can share their experiences with their vehicles?

My dad has a 1994 SL 600.

He hasn't really had any problems with the engine. He has had the following after around 50-60k miles...

Power Steering pump has leaked on several occasions and been repaired.

Front tranny seal went out at about 60k.

Hydraulic front suspension was repaired due to it being too low all the time.

Other than that he hasn't had anything else go wrong really.

Hey, Chris, good to see you at the get together.

What I want to know is this. You meet 8 other guys who live, breathe, and eat MB vehicles, and not one mention that you are thinking of buying an SL 600?

I feel kind of betrayed... (just kidding)

The S600 is a wonderful car! I have a '94 sedan with 60k. It has the same woes as any other 140 (evaporator, closing assist, control arm bushings, engine mounts, etc.) as well as a few of its own. The cylinder head front covers leak oil (about a 10-15 hour job that I'll probably be tackling this weekend) and the 600's have every bell and whistle (more to break). I had to replace the complete engine wiring harness (there are two that can fail on the 600... one goes to the injectors and one goes from the computer module box to the rest of the engine). I had to replace both. The one to the module box took me about 10-12 hours to replace (and I'm very familiar with 140's). The parts were approx $1500. But where else can you get almost 400hp in a very driveable street car?
