Artificial engine noise

BMW is incorporating an artificial engine noise generator that plays through the speakers of the car for a more sporty driving experience. I laughed this off thinking "what a stupid feature" and whatnot. Come to find out, my new vw has a similar artificial noise maker (it's sort of a vibrating thing that acts as a speaker under the hood). I'm not quite sure to think of it except that I'm disappointed the awesome engine noise was partially artificial . I am planning on disabling the noisemaker and just getting a decent intake to let the engine zoom a bit louder (better airflow too, and need it to support mods). What are your thoughts on artificial engine noise on these newer performance cars? The vw forum is generally disappointed but some like the noise (generally more of a buzzing) and its feedback into the cabin during spirited driving bouts.

It disappoints me... Big time.

I love my E55 for the fact that the blower SCREAMS at wide open throttle. There are only a few sounds better than that.....

Its akin to turning the radio up so you don't hear any bad noise while on vacation.

The Ford Mustang uses a tuned port to channel engine noise into the cabin, as opposed to keeping it out. Induction Sound Tube

I've seen an Acura commercial where it states the car creates an exact opposite of the sound wave of various noises in the cabin, so the noise is essentially cancelled out.

Or in another note, I see other cars with dual exhaust tips, where one is a true exhaust tip and the other is blocked off, only to open when the engine is floored or something, to achieve a better exhaust note.

This is common nowadays. The Miata does it as well, along with pretty much every car in the "sporty" category. The VW's thing makes the car louder to the outside world as well though whereas the induction tube thing just gives the occupants some intake noise. At least thats my understanding. If it's the same as what Ford and all the others do, i dont really have a problem with it.

Pretty much. I could see it being of use in something that sounds like crap to begin with (Dodge Caliber comes to mind). I saw one on tv years ago where you could pick what you wanted it to sound like. Ferrari V-12? Press this button. Mopar B-motor? Press that one.

A quieter car feels faster because it's not sounding like it's working as hard.

With all of the insulation and sound-deadening material on modern cars there aren't many other ways to get that sensation.

The vw thing does both but it's mostly inside the cabin. The older models (mk5 and early mk6s) had a "sound tube" which wAs similar to the mustang, just a tube going from the intake to the cabin. This electronic speaker device replaced it, I know the sound tube delete was a popular mod because it disrupted airflow and caused a slight drop in boost.

I'm with you TBO- it actually makes for slightly worse performance and it's artificial in too many ways. Thumbs down.

Sounds like my idea of putting a tape recorder under my ex wife's pillow with recordings of female porn stars screaming and moaning.

Hmmm, that does explain the "ex" part.
